Sigh... Look beyond the smoke and mirrors

Pros

Well, I thought that a pro was that this is a steady job, but people are being fired or told to quit left and right. So who really knows. New management in every area took over and bad mouthed the old ways of doing everything. I loved that I finally knew where the company was headed and there was a lot of transparency and communication. But that only lasted for a few months. For the last 2 months, we've gone back to the old way of doing things (that they said was so awful and that the old management deserved to leave over.) No one really knows what's going on anymore...

Cons

The company tries to pretend to be conscious of employees and things like helping the environment. They periodically try to encourage us to do things like "bring your own silverware to work" (uhh...) or to "bike to work" (when there is no bike rack). Perhaps we would appreciate the company actually doing something to give us the ability to change rather than being told to change on our own. Don't pretend to care... There has also been a lot of talk about being more conscious about remote employees. Right after announcing that they're going to include them more, they announced an easter egg hunt for right that moment. Needless to say many people felt the disconnect with the timing of the activity there. Employees don't feel protected here. Things are very much political and you have to fight for a chance to be heard. Managers are frequently taking credit for others' ideas. This is not a safe work environment. I don't feel like I can go anywhere with my job here. You can't have any better position than what they hired you as. Growth isn't something they like, all they want is us to chug out the production as fast as possible.

We greatly appreciate your comments and perspective. Yes, Imagine Learning has gone through a lot of changes over the past year including leadership changes, acquisitions, and incredible growth. We want you to know that we are working hard to communicate clearly and be transparent with our employees. Having 50% of our workforce working remotely is a tricky space to navigate and we are adopting suggestions to bridge those gaps more effectively. What we can tell you for sure is that we care immensely about our employees and our customers. With growth and potential comes a lot of change, and we’re open to learning more about the experiences of our employees so that we can continue to do what we can to make each employee feel valued and able to do meaningful work. Your feedback and contributions as a long-term employee help us move in a positive direction.

Pros

Things may have changed since I was there a few years ago, but at the time they managed to create a really remarkable culture that was supportive, empowering, and creative. It's one of those places where it seemed like everyone you met really cared about the work they did and the impact that it had on the lives of the children they could serve through the company technology. Being on the sales side of things, it was fun seeing just what kind of a difference the software could make for struggling students of many kinds. Teachers often marveled at how the software helped children, especially struggling readers and ESL.

Cons

While I never experienced this directly, when the business eventually transitioned from the founders stage to control by investors ... some employees felt a bit of that great early vision was lost that made the environment so amazing. Unhealthy competition between managers vying for positions of importance crept in a bit. Hope it wasn't true. Still think they have a great product, and many good people...just not as great of an environment as their early days. Of course, that's the hard part about large growth anyway.
