Pros

They provide free coffee, tea and hot chocolate. There is an employee appreciation day once a year that is nice.

Cons

Micromanagement at all levels. Associates are purely a number and very much replaceable, which is made known. Workload is unrealistic and you will sacrifice family and personal time. At least one person cries from the pressure every week. Wages are low in the production environment. You cannot trust anyone in this organization.

Pros

The overtime is minimal in the IT department. Employees usually stay a long time at the company due to the great benefits. There is a lot of holiday and vacation time and they are flexible if you need time off for family/time with your kids.

Cons

Every five years there seemed to be a turn over in the regime of the IT department. A CIO would get replace then fire all the current managers and bring in all their friends and managers from another company and it would change the structure of the whole department for the worse.

Pros

People care about each other there. You won't get walked out the door because you are having a hard week or month or even a year. There are a lot of fun people and the culture is fairly relaxed, especially for an insurance company.

Cons

There is a high resistance to change at IH. If you are a person who wants to solve the root of a problem, you will probably be very frustrated. There are many people in leadership roles that do not understand technology but try to steer technology decisions. This results in lots of money wasted on vendors and internal technical team members struggling to make bad solutions work. HR is also extremely inflexible and limits pay below market. The structure of pay and bonuses is in complete opposition to performance culture making it a comfortable spot for people with no interest in achievement. If you are a high-achiever, there is a lot of dead weight around that will try to drag you down to their level of performance. The yearly review process is time consuming, extremely tedious, and mostly pointless but it "must" be done on an arbitrary date, despite of anything important that you might be busy with. There are many project managers with apparently not enough work to do so they spend their time interfering with people who are trying to get real work done and pretending to be actual management.
