Pros

Very casual dress code t some offices (jeans). Very good, low cost health plan...rivals most government type jobs. (May be a major reason why some people have stuck it out for so long.) The core mission of ensuring building safety for most of the country is a commendable endeavor. Although the core of that effort does not generate profit (this is a NON-PROFIT organization), there are subsidiaries that are allowed to generate profits. The current CEO appears to be hell-bent on making the sum of the subsidiaries as profitable as possible (and that is not necessarily a bad mission)

Cons

Many new employees are never properly trained or closely mentored. One learns by asking co-workers many questions and sorting it out for themselves . Management is too busy (or possibly uninterested?) to put forth the effort to have formal training plans and close follow-up to keep new folks on productive tracks. Staff was "paired down" about 7 years ago (dip in the construction industry) and some dedicated, sharp employees were lost but some "simply warm" bodies were kept. There is an "old culture" undertow that drags down many of the operations as many in upper management are from the old days (and still operate in their departmental silos.) "Products" manage to be created on tight (and even tighter) schedules and at significant costs to employee morale and health. Older hard working employees can't wait to reach minimum retirement age to end their misery. Other older workers who are low effort contributors often hang on to milk everything they can from the decent 401K plan (having decent company contribution percentage). For the most part, it is a typical "government job" with too much work, for too little pay and all the frustrations of stick in the mud bureaucracies. Granted, there are small bonuses from time-to-time when coffers happen to be deep but most are given across the board to all employees, good and not so good alike. Show up, keep your head down and don't cause trouble and you might get to work here the rest of your life. Just don't expect to go anywhere or to keep up with cost of living over the years. But this is the nature of many non-profit organizations, not just this one.
