Great People - Poorly Managed

Pros

The people there are dedicated, hard working, and friendly. The campus is very nice and comfortable, with open spaces and well spaced cubicles.

Cons

The problems created by the engine fiasco have not taught management many lessons, unfortunately. They still tend to dictate without much listening to those with valuable knowledge and experience. They tend to promote to management based on the buddy system or simply by tossing a dart, rather than choosing people with true management talent. Many managers are lacking in people skills, and basic civility, especially in the electrical engineering area. All of these problems have led to a continuing exodus of talent. In some departments, performance evaluations can hinge on whether or not you have put in 45+ hours per week, regardless of whether that much time is really needed to perform your tasks.

Pros

Company has good pay, strong benefits, impressive history. Seems to be minimal politics when it comes to hiring and promotion which is good.

Cons

This is a company that has fallen hard on it's face the last few years. It's the laughing stock of the truck industry and the competition is eating them for lunch. The company should be doing everything it can to rebuild it's reputation, but it's just not doing that. Incredibly outdated systems and that can't live up to the competition's systems. Never worked for a company where employees have to be emailed at least 2-3+ times to get something done. People do not reply to emails, do not call you back, and are rude to you when you try to get them to do their job. I thought it was an anomaly, but after working there for 3 years I see this in all departments I deal with. Senior management does nothing to address it, and doesn't like to hear about it. If you can even get them to reply that is...

Pros

Great place for task-oriented people who carry low expectations and lack ambition, and people who live outside the city limits.

Cons

No product innovation. Bad financial state. Shareholder activism. Dubious GM retirees as executives. Top heavy organization. Incompetent middle managers lacking basic problem solving skills. Old school thinking and actions. Political silos. No opportunities to grow and develop in the good'ol boys' network. Low quality and overworked employees. Poor morale, below industry salaries, and dwindling benefits.
