Pros

A majority of coworkers were dedicated to their work and supportive of peers. Often a joy to work with children and be a part of their growth. While teachers work more days than students are present, it is nice to have breaks with your children.

Cons

Expectations of administration and needs of students can not be met in 50 hour work week. Staffing always short, often to the detriment of the students and definitely the faculty. More students would benefit from screenings and many parents can not afford to have private screenings.

Pros

I love working with kids, this job was made for me, I love growing relationships with the kids, teaching them in a different way, great pay, lots of incentives to get certified (free praxis test, free certification program through the parish, extra $$), so many schools in the area to choose from, creative in finding fun games and activities for the kids' center times

Cons

if you pick the wrong school, the admin might come in your classroom every day, write you up for stupid little things like the kids not being engaged when the slides suck but we have to follow "district procedures", do not get a bonus after each year teaching if not certified, you might sign a contract and have low enrollment and get switched to another school on the westbank (far from my home), can't wear athleisure at every school, might have really bad kids one year but them not listening is still you failing them (according to the parish), nap time is being taken out and the kids are much more grumpy, lots of progress monitoring and documenting every little thing is so time consuming sometimes, clusters can make or break you (my first school criticized us like we were terrorists, but my second school made it a warm and welcoming meeting where we didn't feel so bullied all the time)

Pros

+ Autonomy: teachers in the arts receive the freedom to focus on projects, media, and subject matter of their choice as long as it pertains to the state standards + Coworkers: many teachers have decades of experience and can be of assistance + some flexibility in the duty schedule to accommodate those with children or parents with special needs

Cons

- Upperlevel administration: Meetings are not useful and scheduled so that those teaching similiar subjects do not have the opportunity to collaborate during their planning period, at least in many departments - Resources: Teacher must purchases nearly 100 % of supplies out of their own pocket making extensive grant writing a necessity. For needs like technology, basics are not provided, even as dictated by DE or AP curriculum. - physical building is in a state of disrepair in some buildings and classrooms are not maintained appropriately by cleaning staff.
