Revamp Needed: Culture Talk vs. Accountability Reality

Business Outlook

Pros

Privately Owned: Johnsonville is privately owned, allowing for flexibility in performance metrics. Job Security: It’s challenging to be fired unless a significant error is made. Employees can work at their own pace without fear of immediate consequences. Flexible Performance Expectations: The company is lenient with performance indicators. Even slower workers receive the same ratings as more efficient employees.

Cons

Culture Misalignment: Johnsonville often hides behind its culture, using it to justify poor business decisions. Mistakes by management are labeled as “learning,” whereas employee mistakes are scrutinized. Weak Leadership: There is a lack of strong management at the Director/Sr. Director levels. The company operates on tenure rather than merit. Outdated Performance Management: There is no modern performance management process. Goals are not clearly set at the beginning of the year, and KPIs are not well-aligned by leaders. Inconsistent Cultural Practice: Despite emphasizing coaching and feedback, the company paused its employee engagement survey when results were unfavorable, highlighting a gap between talking about culture and living it. Lack of Incentives: The profit-sharing bonus is based on total company performance, not individual contributions, leading to a lack of motivation for personal excellence. Talent Retention Issues: There’s a worrying trend of young talent leaving due to lack of innovation and growth opportunities, while long-tenured employees focus on retirement rather than business growth.

We hope you’ve shared your feedback and ideas with your coach and/or your Member Services team. Some of what you’ve published below is what we’ve heard before and have been working on such areas to improve our culture and ensure new Members are also aligned. Our Member Survey is scheduled for early fall 2024. We’ve had a committee working on The Johnsonville Way to improve the way we speak and live our core values, provide better training and ensure better consistency across our growing organization. We do truly believe we “work as a team and win as a team,” which is why the company performance is tied to our team and department contributions. And as you know, individual development and performance plans are tied to KPIs. We’re excited to share our next strategic and long-range plans with Members very soon. It sounds like you have some ideas about initiatives that could drive our culture forward so we hope you can be a part of these solutions. Thanks for sharing your feedback.

Pros

Management is good at making theories and coming up with excuses or pushing the blame onto the workers.

Cons

Poor management on all levels. Favoritism, sexual harassment, rampant adultery, blatant lying from management and bold claims of "caring as if we are a family".
