Pros

I joined the organization in a marketing role that required a high level of independence, as there was limited guidance or support from my direct leader. Over time, I built strong cross-department relationships and developed a successful program largely through my own initiative. This work supported the company on multiple levels and required close collaboration with internal teams to be effective. During my tenure, I managed critical business and employee-facing initiatives during the pandemic and other high-pressure situations, both locally and nationally. My efforts were consistently recognized, including multiple acknowledgments from the CEO in company-wide settings for performance, results, and impact. I genuinely enjoyed my role and felt respected at the executive level for the work I delivered.

Cons

However, my direct leadership experience was very different. The leadership style within my immediate reporting structure felt highly controlling and dismissive of input, with limited openness to collaboration or differing perspectives. Decision-making appeared top-down, and success was not always met with support or constructive dialogue. This created a challenging and stressful environment despite strong performance and positive recognition elsewhere in the organization. After several years of strong performance, my position was eliminated unexpectedly. The decision came as a surprise and did not align with my prior feedback, results, or recognition. The role was subsequently filled by someone with no experience in this area, which made the transition difficult to understand. Having a role I was passionate about end so abruptly was disappointing and changed my perspective on leadership consistency and long-term stability within the department. Since my departure, I have observed continued turnover within the marketing team, suggesting ongoing challenges with leadership approach and team culture. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this organization to marketing professionals seeking a collaborative, supportive environment with transparent leadership and mutual respect.

Pros

I worked with incredibly talented, supportive, and kind coworkers who truly care about their work and one another.

Cons

Unfortunately, my experience working in marketing has been extremely negative. The culture within the marketing department has changed significantly and not for the better. Leadership at the VP level lacks empathy, emotional intelligence, and true leadership skills. The environment is very much “my way or the highway,” with little to no openness to collaboration, creativity, or differing perspectives. Decisions appear to be driven by ego rather than strategy, resulting in the removal of hardworking, talented individuals and creating a constant atmosphere of fear across the team. Work-life balance is essentially nonexistent. Long hours are expected, flexibility is not supported, and burnout is normalized. Team members are afraid to speak up, share ideas, or offer professional opinions, which stifles innovation and morale. The marketing environment is toxic. Directors are treated poorly, publicly and privately undermined, and spoken to in a demeaning manner. This behavior sets a tone that cascades throughout the department. Benefits are below industry standards and do not compensate for the stress, lack of flexibility, or poor culture. I would not recommend this organization to marketing professionals who value collaboration, creativity, psychological safety, or healthy leadership. Significant leadership and cultural changes would be required for this to become a supportive or sustainable workplace.

Marketing is a mess

Pros

Good coworkers. A lot of hardworking people who genuinely care and help each other out.

Cons

Benefits are horrible. Not competitive and not worth what’s expected from employees. Pay increases and bonuses feel skewed toward the same people every year. Hard work doesn’t always matter. Marketing leadership is weak. There is no real mentorship or guidance, communication is poor, and leadership can be rude and disrespectful, The main marketing leader always thinks he’s right and doesn’t respect other opinions or ideas. Feedback isn’t welcomed, and decisions feel one-sided. The culture in the department is rough. Employees are expected to work long hours. Leadership talks about work-life balance and family values but doesn’t act on it. Flexibility has completely gone away. Notice the many new positions available and take that as a sign. There is a lot of favoritism and nepotism. Who you know matters more than how hard you work. The company says it supports inclusivity and women in leadership, but it feels like talk only. The direction has clearly changed.
