Pros

Good pay potential, good company.

Cons

Toxic management I am a little heart-broken about Kin as there was good pay potential and the company has an excellent niche market. When I was leading the team in sales. I quit because of a toxic, micro-manager (who only had experience in auto insurance, at GIECO, to make things worse)... In my case, I could have a customer with a good company and a good rate, and I would be reprimanded for not asking for the sale (almost verbatim to a script my supervisor created on her own). Even if we were 4x the rate with inferior coverage, I would be reprimanded for not asking for the sale since, "what if", the customer had bad coverage (in violation of my conscience and, encouraging agents to, potentially, violate one's legal fiduciary responsibility to the insured).... To make matters worse, when I expressed my concern, my manager replied with a touch of narcissism stating, "I think its just in your head". Secondly, during training, there was a supervising manager who had a way of instilling fear in the employee if something needed corrected. The training was a bit too long and, in some ways over-complicated, and I had to adjust starting my day at 6 AM PST. I ended up going back to Matic Insurance where I had good success and a much better and supportive vibe from management.

Pros

Great co-workers is the only good thing about this department.

Cons

This department is deeply dysfunctional on a management level. Leadership is ineffective and the current director appears disconnected from ongoing issues while consistently avoiding holding managers accountable. Appreciation is rare with only one manager demonstrating genuine respect for employees. Internal employees are largely treated as an afterthought unless they are clearly favored or avoid challenging leadership in any way. Favoritism is obvious and pervasive. Concerns and complaints have been raised yet no meaningful action has followed. Recent hiring practices have further reinforced this pattern. The last several hires and postings have all been external with no advancement or growth opportunities offered to internal employees. One recent hire appeared to be directly selected by a manager raising concerns about fairness for both internal staff and external applicants. There is a clear lack of professionalism and respect. Negative commentary about underwriting associates and underwriters occurs frequently despite leadership seeming unaware that these conversations and statements are visible and widely noticed. The result is a demoralizing environment where employees feel undervalued and stuck with no clear path forward. Anyone considering joining this department should seriously reconsider as upward mobility appears extremely limited.

Pros

The only pro is you don't have to work in the office

Cons

KIN acquired a new agency, Elite Insurance Group. The managers are manipulative and will gaslight you into believing they have your best interests when the facts are they regret purchasing the agency and doing damage control using the agents and taking advantage of them. They are irresponsible with your licenses, time cards, and compensation structure. They are looking to hire more people to pay them less. You will never see a decent paycheck and you're not inbound agents. You will make at least 50 calls a day over and over.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your experience with our organization. As we continue to build out our company, we are always looking for opportunities to make transitions like this one more seamless for our Kinfolk. We strive to ensure our colleagues feel highly valued and offer competitive pay scales in line with market rates. We are continuously expanding our total rewards program. As a remote-first company, it’s important to us to have competitive salaries for all our roles at Kin. Not great

Pros

It is just okay; I have worked for other tech companies with a way better culture, management, and career growth, which is why it is OK. It is a remote-first company, so there can be flexibility in your work day that you may need; for exempt employees, there are unlimited vacation days. There are some wonderful contributors and teammates that are very talented. Some teams seem to have a great team culture within their department, but there is a significant disparity depending on the department's leaders for other teams.

Cons

Many silos make collaboration inefficient, and getting information is so difficult. You can go on a long easter egg hunt to find the correct information or person you need to speak with. You would think they would offer a bonus structure at this company stage, but they don't. For performance reviews, my manager told me that no one gets "exceeding, "even though they said my work was exceeding, but they were directed not to give that as a score. So it feels like a hamster wheel of delivering an exceeding performance but never being rewarded or promoted. They also constantly say there needs to be a business need for a promotion, yet there is no clear communication on what the business need is, and business needs are constantly changing. In some departments, there is a lot of misogyny, even at the very top, and no clear path to career growth and promotions; most of the company values are very male-dominated language: "Run through walls" or "Raise the bar." They preach that their company culture supports diversity but has no focus on DEI. All communication for company announcements or organizational changes is done through Slack, making it difficult to find any message because there are many Slack channels and messages to sort through. Their internal communication systems and processes are lacking.

Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad you’ve had positive experiences with some of your teammates and appreciated the flexibility of our remote-first environment. We take your concerns seriously—especially regarding misogyny and lack of inclusion. We do not stand for a misogynistic environment and are committed to fostering a culture where everyone feels respected and supported. If you're open to sharing more, we’d welcome more details through our anonymous All Voices platform so we can look into this further and take appropriate action.
