Work/Life Balance? Yeah, right!

Pros

-- They pay a premium -- There is no shortage of work -- There is plenty of client contact, which means networking possibilities are limitless

Cons

-- They pay a premium, but the demands placed on you typically far exceed normal human tolerances. -- There is no shortage of work...and it's usually expected to be completed in an unrealistic time frame -- Inter-discipline infighting is ridiculous. It is a dysfunctional company. -- How many more times are we going to change health insurance companies? They supposedly improve, with the cost being more to the employee, yet the raises we've gotten don't even cover the cost increase...,much less the cost-of-living increase. -- This is a top-heavy company. They need a cover letter just for the letterhead alone. Seriously, how were you promoting people in a down economy???

Pros

Good compensation and annual bonuses, plus additional bonus opportunities depending on your level and years with the company. Good benefits overall. There are a ton of intelligent people here and many seem to enjoy what they do.

Cons

Langan took on a private equity partner last year. Work feels increasingly more rushed, less technical and methodical. Technical delivery has suffered as a result. Leadership is increasingly more difficult to get ahold of as they are constantly traveling and bringing in new opportunities. It's like drinking from a firehose and many project managers seem quite overwhelmed. On the flip side, there is a bottleneck for reviewing and submitting technical reports as the aforementioned leadership are too busy to review reports in a timely manner. Also, leadership plays favorites. It's an unspoken rule here that 40 hours is the minimum work week. If - God forbid - you have obligations outside of work, expect to be overlooked and ignored.

Pigeonhole

Pros

Mostly good people and mentors, interesting projects, good at field work/CAD training

Cons

No work life balance, expected to work very late and use earned comp time if your team is light on work. Pigeonholed into doing field work for your early career and then expected to know how to use technical software and design when they throw you back in the office 2-3 years later. Billability IS your fault even if you’re actively seeking out work and you’re not the one losing the project proposals. Clear favoritism amongst teams and certain staff are stuck doing the grunt work yet still expected to perform at a higher level when not given the opportunity to do such tasks. Exposed to a lot of hazardous materials on brownfield cleanups yet decontamination and safety precautions are pretty lax (“you can wear a mask if you feel unsafe”).
