Pros

The pro is you don't have to work here unless you have the finances to pay for Langan's expensive projects upfront.

Cons

The cost of a recent project cost $2000 which had to be fronted by an employee or the project would not have moved forward. Langan should have accounts with stores like Home Depot/Lowes for their projects. I asked why they do not have hardware store accounts and the answer I received was, "The way they see it is you will turn in the receipts if you really want your money back." Here is how I see it: How about Langan provide hardware store access through a company account so employees don't have to spend their own money, esp. $2k, upfront? If they want their receipt, It can be scanned/emailed. Truth is, electronic receipts are mailed to a designated email account and paper ones aren't even required for accounts payable. Langan does not support travel for employees either. You have to have your own money to travel for the company upfront or you can't get to another team/project; then they will not like you. They ask before hire if you are willing to travel but do not disclose you pay upfront. The support for training was not delivered as promised. Teaching one/two lines of Leica coding and acting as though all has been taught is not a fair practice to trainees. Basic AutoCad training for surveyors is not supported at the corporate level as the work pertains to them (with Carlson, AutoCad and, ProjectWise). The survey Cad Techs have to use work arounds that aren't known and supported by the AutoCad training department. This alone can make things confusing and frustrating. Especially when the senior Surveyors and management who know these work arounds do not take real time to show trainees and worse have a sense of belittlement when training/teaching. Simply stated, Langan is lazy and ill prepared at the corporate level when it comes to surveyor training.

We appreciate your feedback, and we’re sorry you did not view your employment as a positive experience. At Langan there are many options and opportunities for training, development and growth in all areas of the firm. The areas you found to be lacking are, in fact, available at Langan – from robust classroom and hands-on trainings, to flexible advanced payment and reimbursement options for supplies and travel. We strive for every employee to have a positive experience and have the resources and support necessary to be successful. We would have liked the opportunity to clarify and help you identify which resources would have best supported you. We wish you the best.

Pros

There are a few good project managers at Langan that are reasonable, know what it is like to be in the field, and when things go wrong or are delayed, they take responsibility and work with the team to find a solution. The time-off bank is a good system to allow overtime / vacation.

Cons

The work as a staff engineer is incredibly redundant, repetitive, and brainless. Many times you find yourself recording data that a computer is already recording, as more or less a human insurance policy in case something goes wrong so the company has a record to bolster their argument in the finger-pointing circus that ensues. Managers across Langan are wildly inconsistent, some request pages long daily write ups that are redundant, repetitive, meaningless work. Managers also request field engineers to record data / measurements / observations that are already recorded or meaningless just to justify the cost of the field engineer being out there to the client. Many many times I found that managers were "over budget" for a project that you were assigned to. This meant that the field engineer couldn't charge their work to a particular job and had to charge hours for "overhead" because of poor planning on the manager's side, or were given ridiculous hour constraints to work within. There is very little feeling of adding value to projects. There is no reward structure for working tough jobs (some jobs run 12 hours shifts from 7PM to 7AM, 6 days a week), but compensation remains the same. Engineers stuck on these jobs are left out to dry by management.
