Big and Slow

Pros

Good connection with immediate managers, fairly stable company, generally good coworkers. A lot of lateral mobility if you want to try something else. Teams often work together on extra projects and promote a good community.

Cons

Upper management does not seem to be aware of what is needed to actually perform our jobs. Computer systems are poorly designed and buggy making an otherwise easy job difficult. No real response from upper management when suggestions are made. Company has been outsourcing positions (that they probably ought not to) to the Philippines. Also 30 minute lunch breaks.

Toxic environment with no process

Pros

Large company with some potential for individual promotion depending on the group you work with. Big data and health care is hot right now. Depending on your manager, employees may have the ability to work from home more than one day per week.

Cons

Communication from upper level management is poor and almost non-existent. Most of your day is spent watching your butt and answering emails. Acquisitions made over the past few years have allowed the company to obtain new data sources, but poor antiquated, proprietary technology and a lack of process and planning has slowed development and innovation down to a snail's pace. I can only speak to the King of Prussia office, but employees are resigning in droves and those who remain, seem miserable, disengaged and nervous. Architects are designing the solutions and the product / business side of the house is weak, disengaged and offers little to no strategy or direction. Most of the 'software' being developed is really just glorified web forms and looks like it was developed in the year 1995. The health benefits are horrific and many managers are overpaid, under qualified and lack integrity. The company does not properly apply agile principles to development. User research is something this group doesn't understand. Customers are not engaged when they should be and are often lied to by sales and project managers. There is a lack of cohesive and concrete go to market strategy. This company is a glorified data re-seller and not best in class in any other category. My recommendation is stay away unless you want to stagnate your career.

Pros

The organization does encourage internal growth and provides its employees with a strong Benefits package.

Cons

The pay scale is well below market. My position, for example, pays at least 50% more at competitors such as HireRight. A former colleague of mine at the recently acquired Ediwatch recently concurred, based on what she is now being paid at LexisNexis Screening Solutions, versus the competition and comparable positions at that level. Additionally, the LexisNexis Risk Solutions management team, while communicating its high degree of employee support and coaching, falls well short of its promises. A number of managers know very little about the company's products and services, and do little to learn them. There are many managers that are unable to use correct written and verbal grammar. The Leadership team expects an overwhelming level of production from its employees, with significantly less compensation offered versus the marketplace.

Pros

Exposure to large customers, experience with enterprise accounts at a junior level, and location.

Cons

Poor pay (REALLY bad); the company was adept at paying folks the lowest amount possible. Even when promoted internally, they set rigid restrictions on how much of a compensation change someone could receive. To put this in perspective, I went from a call center to being a Premier Support Technical Account Manager and received less than a 5% raise. The management is completely out of touch with employees. They expect you to be on call, work overtime, work abnormal hours ect, but offer no incentives or even a roadmap for career progression. This, combined with low pay resulted in an endemic of low moral and motivation during my time with LexisNexis. From about the second week at this company, you become aware that you will have to leave the company to further your career. They offer no means of expanding your career at a junior level, while it is abundantly clear upper management is generously compensated.

Pros

Realizing that their employees make the company what it is, they opened up many available opportunities to learn and train and become better and more knowledgeable for your job. You certainly have numerous options to choose from.

Cons

Seems that there are too many middle managers and not enough direct reports. Also, department structure changes too much and you never know who to report to.

Pros

PTO days are very generous, RE Cares days to volunteer are great if you volunteer frequently, quite a few perks for employees, telework opportunities.

Cons

Senior level management is horribly disrespectful to Directors in front of subordinates. I have been in management positions for over 10 years and I have never seen this much disrespect of staff members before. Obviously, no one taught the top decision makes to praise in public and scold in private. Managers tend to take on projects and push work down to the grunts, and then complain when it doesn't get done - typical traits of poor leadership. Processes that you would think would be in place for such a large company are not, making simple tasks take forever, thus angering upper management about not meetind deadlines. Too many 'fire drills' for Senior Level Management - the things people worry about sometimes are crazy! Instead of spending time on things that really help customers or promote our company to potential customers, managers are more concerned about making their team look better than other teams. Team communications to staff take piority over work that benefits our customer. Ridiculous when you consider that one of our biggest competitors is undercutting our prices and causing us to lose business and revenue! High turn over in several verticals. It seems that every few months, another Director is leaving, either for another company, or to go to Reed Elsevier. Its actually pretty surprising how short employees' tenures are with this company. The company is very Risk averse. They want to try new things that are safe and don't cost anything. Getting additional headcount is almost impossible, pushing more work down on the grunts and worker bees.
