Pros

It is a joy to see kids' skills grow day by day, and to contribute to the process. The management is pleasant and the consistent mentoring is helpful.

Cons

We were given part-time hours with the expectation of full-time availability. Schedules were provided at the end of business Friday and were sometimes changed in the middle of the week. These factors make procuring additional employment difficult, if not impossible. Demanding that staff with low/moderate wages (compared to skill level and requirements) and zero benefits be perpetually available is presumptuous at best. Also, some children had severe behavior issues. Training was not provided in that area.

Pros

Working with the students is fantastic. They brightened my days and made all of the hard work worthwhile. I made genuine connections with so many of them and felt like I was making a difference - not only with their learning, but personally, too.

Cons

The position was called "part-time", but it was only part-time when it suited management. For several weeks I was scheduled for 40 hours, even though I was requesting fewer. I learned quickly that my time would not be respected, as I was regularly asked to stay late or come in early - day of. You are told it's your choice, but when you say no you get a passive-aggressive guilt trip from management. My supervisor was constantly contradicting himself and talking in circles about any concerns I had. It was so frustrating that I couldn't stay anymore. As much as I loved the work itself, and especially the clients, I wasn't paid nearly enough to be dealing with all of the shenanigans going on behind the scenes. So disappointing.

Pros

Opportunities for travel, great and challenging students to work with, good and frequent professional development, fun to be working with kids

Cons

Can occasionally be a high stress environment with a frequently changing schedule, not many cons other than that
