Cons
- Terrible retirement benefits. - Despite what other reviews say, I find time off to be below par. I've worked at other institutions that start you off with more vacation time and comparable scheduled holidays. On top of that, everywhere else I've worked allows you to roll over unused vacation and pays out unused vacation time upon separation from the institution. - Pay that isn't reflective of the cost of living in the area. - Abhorrent Student Information System makes the most basic of tasks nigh insurmountable and creates situations where we are unable to effectively serve our students. Administration largely ignores all complaints about this. - Toxic elements to the work culture. Some departments and individuals hold a privileged status and are given leeway to behave unprofessionally toward other individuals and departments. - Lack of respect amongst the student body toward staff. Many of our students are wonderful and a delight to work with, but there is a measurable segment who are rude or even openly antagonistic toward staff. There are few, if any, consequences for this kind of behavior. - Administrative bloat. Administration addresses staffing shortages by adding new layers of management. - Poor work life balance. The aforementioned SIS requires a shocking amount of manual work, and staffing levels in many departments cannot meet these demands. Rather than hire additional staff, the existing staff are pressured to just "make it happen." This results in regular 10+ hour days and hourly employees working off the clock.
