Pros

Some great people work there

Cons

Those great people's talents are wasted. The problem is at the top. Every startup pivots, but not usually every year. If you're in sales..what are you selling? Oh, wait that got canceled or mysteriously disappeared from the website. Oh it costs 10x the competition with 1/2 the function -- sure no problem we got this somehow...oh but no resources to explain what it does? That dog just won't hunt! This is a company with multiple failed product launches in a row, a failed acquisition, dropping in analyst reports, a massive C-Suite for a company its size. At this point, I think the HR team might be twice the size of the sales engineering team and why?? I'll leave piling on the Chief People Officer to the other reviews, but I concur. From an employee standpoint, there are yearly layoffs and they aren't necessarily targeted in a way you'll understand -- half the time you don't even know they happened until later.

Broken Company Culture

Pros

There are lots of really smart people here. They're willing to work hard. Executive management knows something is wrong with the culture and HR is trying hard to fix it (but they can only band aid the problem)

Cons

No opportunity for advancement for anyone, ever. Executive management doesn't have the skills to build a product. They don't know who they're building a product for, what that product needs to do for the customer. Reactivity to VC messages means that management is making costly weekly/monthly/quarterly changes to strategy. This lack of cohesion leads to a lack of morale. Bring someone in that knows what it takes to build a product, tell the VCs to come back and visit in 9 months and get the product built.

Don't Believe the Gripe

Pros

1) Huge market opportunity that extends far beyond search + AI and touches many adjacent, lucrative markets. If we nail this thing, we can build an amazing business. 2) Genuinely good people. Yes there are some exceptions, but this place has a lot of heart and most of the employees are smart, helpful and just downright good folks. 3) I've seen some of the recent negative reviews, but it just hasn't been my experience at the company. Nobody likes getting made redundant (especially in times like these), so I can understand the raw nerves, but you should take the reviews with a grain of salt.

Cons

The Cons are typical of any burgeoning enterprise software startup - tough to get everyone rowing in the same direction, a large workload, general frustrations at trying to move a business in a new direction. I do think Lucidworks needs to get more disciplined. The market opportunity won't last forever and the company needs to execute this pivot.
