Very interesting place to work

Pros

I think the work climate is great, and the people are wonderful. There aren't any roadblocks in career development and a lot of support if you want to advance. Contrary to some posts, the work hours aren't that terrible at all. If you want to work a 35 hour week, join HP or IBM. The fact that direction gets adjusted from time to time only shows that you're working for a still relatively small startup. It's better to change direction than to go under!

Cons

Too much stuff to do with too few people. This leads to the frequent adjustments.

Great people and culture and very big market opportunity

Pros

- A CEO who really cares about people and culture. - A multi-dimensional product roadmap that is super ambitious and exciting. - Passionate, smart team. It's a mix of photo enthusiasts and engineers who are really motivated by the challenge of "reinventing" photography and working on stuff nobody has done before. It's a wicked smart, quirky, fun team, and I've built some strong friendships in my time here. - Low politics. - Flexible work environment. - I'm learning new things, and being asked to do new things constantly which keeps me on my toes.

Cons

- What we're trying to do is really hard, and success won't happen overnight. Those who want immediate results may get impatient. - There is constant change...most of it is very positive and intentional, but for those who are averse to change, I'd recommend you stick to a larger company environment. - We're high on innovation, but have lots of room for growth on process and internal operations. This is a challenge at most start-ups. We're making lots of headway but need to continue to improve here.

Unhealthy work environment for engineers

Pros

The majority of engineers are nice and collaborative.

Cons

Lytro is for people good at politics rather than engineering. The engineering managers have little technical knowledge in relevant area and cannot have a discussion based on math and science. They emotionally push their inconsistent and nonsensical opinions on engineers. They don't hesitate to tell a lie and harass engineers daily. The fundamental product development is getting stagnant over the last year.
