Pros

There are many opportunities to learn a variety of techniques thanks to their online seminars. The patients are wonderful and give you hope for the every day. It is a very interesting place to work, and you do end up working towards a greater goal which is highly motivating.

Cons

Hard to progress upwards in your field. There is a sense of being back in high school with the cliques and the attitudes between staff members. Faculty tend to have an "above it" attitude towards the staff.

Pros

The anchor of the Texas Medical Center (TMC). MDACC has 21,000 employees, 2,000 of whom are faculty (clinical and/or research). TMC has ~100,000 employees, same amount of office space as downtown Houston, and the world's largest parking concession. Cancer patients can get about equally great treatment at MDACC as any of the other top ten NCI designated cancer centers in the US - go to one of these, not Joe's for profit cancer center that happens to be in your town. Texas does not have a state income tax. Air conditioning bill in Houston can be less than heating & A/C in the north.

Cons

Lots of silos, not much communication between them. Competition can be as fierce within MDACC as it is between MDACC and other leading cancer centers. Don't drive on I-10 through downtown during heavy rains. Don't live in or near a low spot - prone to flooding. Culture & values: "We do things the Anderson way" = the same way for the past 20 years. If your prospective manager uses this phrase during your interview, don't take the job.

Pros

MD Anderson has great benefit and work life balance. They do like to help their employees succeed. Great team to work with.

Cons

Overworked and underpaid. It is hard to get promoted within your team unless you move to a different department. It is hard to switch to a different department as well.
