Work-Life Balance is good, everything else isn't.

Pros

Reasonable expectations from management for most work. Company values a work-life balance. The cafeteria is very good, and the company subsidizes the prices to keep them low. During a recent catastrophy, the company made sure that everyone got paid. Some people in the company are terrific.

Cons

Massive gulf between upper management and the people on the ground. Little to no leadership - in a crisis, even the managers throw their hands up and say "I don't know, I guess I'll just do nothing," and the people miles above who are making the decisions do an extremely poor job of relaying vital information. Company is too complex and over-organized - fighting against institutional inertia to solve even simple problems is like running uphill through razor blades. Absolutely no accountability for toxic employees and practices. Forced to use tools that make work much, much harder. Barely any vacation, and forced to take it at specific times for a company shutdown, making it's nearly-impossible to plan a vacation for yourself at a time of your choosing unless it coincides with the shut-downs (which aren't announced until a month out). Company prefers to hire from outside rather than promote from within, so there are minimal career advancement opportunities. IT department is practically non-existent.

Pros

The management is nice. The work is good if you like manufacturing work and it is repetitive. It is a great place to start your career in manufacturing.

Cons

There wasn't a lot of room for growth in the position I was in. I left the company because I was laid off.

Thank you for sharing your experience and for being part of the Irvine team. We’re especially glad to hear your input feels heard and that you see strong business practices in place—both are essential to how we work at MKS: We believe that good decision-making starts with listening. Two-way communication and drawing on the knowledge and experience of our teams are key to continuous improvement and long-term success. We also appreciate your feedback around process and training. Streamlining how we work and creating accessible ways to build skills are both important areas, and it’s good to know that team support is helping fill the gaps in the meantime. If there’s more you’d like to share, we’d welcome your input through our Digital Dialogue program or at mks.feedback@mksinst.com.

It’s great to hear that collaboration, access to leading-edge technology, and communication from leadership are all making a difference in your experience. We strive to maintain that kind of environment as, for us, it forms the foundation that powers possibilities. We also recognize how important competitive pay is. Pros

In general I’ve found working at MKS to be a good thing. The people I work with are excellent. My group leaders and management are good. There has been over the years several excellent managers to work with. Things come and go, and overall I found the culture of MKS to be reasonably supportive and adaptable to employee needs.

Cons

I think the company tends to undervalue its employees. At least those who are not on salary. I am an hourly employee. Although I have consistently been rated as competent or above confident in the performance of my job, I very rarely get anything more than a 2 1/2 to 3% increase in my yearly salary. Essentially, I got enough to cover inflation if it’s a good year. I think MKS would be served by more generously compensating its hourly employees.
