Pros

You ever had Sunday afternoon roll around and you fill up with dread at the thought of going to work the next day? Well I haven't had that experience since I came to work at MachineMetrics. I started when we were basically a tiny garage startup, and now we're five times the size and rapidly expanding. Throughout the whole process, MM never lost its charms, which include: - Awesome co-workers: I get to work with some of the smartest, most experienced, most competent people on the planet. And everybody is incredibly chill, a culture that emanates from the top (the founders). - Started in Northampton in western Mass, the company maintains that small town family business feel, even at our other locations. - Interesting work. Every day I go in, I have exciting work to do and difficult problems to solve. At the end of the day, I can see what I built and how it affects the manufacturing industry in a concrete way. I also get to play with cutting edge technology, which is catnip for engineers. - Great benefits, especially given our size. I particularly love the HSA health insurance and the 401k matching. Also the flexibility for remote work is wonderful. - At the risk of sounding like a sycophant, awesome founders. I moved to Northampton to work for MM from NYC, having never heard of the place. Why would I take such a large risk? Because the founders and their vision was inspiring. Great founders have produced a great company with a great product and a great culture.

Cons

I love it here, and have been solicited with plenty of opportunities to leave, but I have no plans to. The main con I can think of, which isn't a con to me, is that we still lack a lot of the structures that larger companies have. Onboarding and training are still rough, but are things we've prioritized improving this year. This isn't a great company for somebody who requires a lot of structure or doesn't do well with ambiguity. Flexibility is required.

Pros

As a "startup" company (5 years as of 2019) they offer good salaries and the opportunity to work on very interesting problems. The work is intense but the demands a reasonable: nobody expects you to work unreasonable hours for example unless there was an emergency. It offers benefits although the health benefits were not very generous, however the good salary compensated this. Retirement benefits were good, and they offer dental insurance but no vision plan. Share options can be purchased at a lower rate (developers and engineers) but that is "icing on the cake" that should never tilt a decision to join a company.

Cons

The same "startup" mindset meant that they want results fast and they want you to conform for what they expect. Results need to be delivered quickly, there are not enough procedures in place, in other words they are still figuring out how to grow while delivering results quickly. My personal experience (this is not the case for everybody I found out) was that onboarding was lacking and I did not get the required attention and help I needed to learn the software that was being developed. In the end I discovered that it was a bad fit, which made me feel confused about what they hired me in the first place. In my opinion their expectations did align to what I could provide to the company. In terms of management they made the mistake of equating engineering brilliance with good management material, that is sometimes a mistake. This was my bad luck but also a reflection of their lack of management experience. Your mileage may vary and you may fit perfectly which explains the tile of this review.

Pros

Great benefits, collaborative team environment - everyone from the owner down is willing to put in the work to make the company thrive. Culture is based on mutual respect regardless of job title. Truly an amazing place to work.

Cons

None yet that I've seen. Parking in Northampton is always a challenge, but they offset that with an employee parking-pass raffle.
