Pros

All employees receive discounts on store merchandise. Type of people depend on the department. The competency of management also varies greatly, depending on the department.

Cons

Very micromanaged within the stores. The rules are very rigid for all employees- including assistant managers and sales associates. I felt very restricted in what I was allowed/ wasn't allowed to do. All employees are forced to say "outstanding," make certain sales levels, and to sell credit cards. There is much politicking within the management team. Lots of rumors are spread through the grapevine regarding hiring/promotion processes. As far as working in the department stores, downsides outweigh upsides.

Pros

I love my customers and working with my vendor. I am given a lot of freedom and flexibility in how I schedule my day. I do receive wonderful training and guidance from my vendor which is an Estee Lauder company. Macys is good about recognizing you for doing a good job with lots of awards and incentives. The discount and Macys money is also great.

Cons

There is a huge emphasis on making quotas for credit card applications. Management focuses more on non essentials that they are reviewed on than true customer service and sales.

Pros

Training is the best in the industry. Once you train here, you can work anywhere. Other retailers are dying to get their hands on Macy's employees.

Cons

NO work/life balance. They say there is, but people don't follow it and it's frowned upon if you leave on time and actually take lunch. They do not compensate fairly. You can barely live on their salary.
