Pros

The job was very fun. I worked in the visual department and my whole day was a creative outlet. The hours seemed to fly by and I left work in a good mood.

Cons

There were not enough people on the team and sometimes projects had to be rushed for completion, sacrificing quality. Also, due to company downsizing, my position was eliminated and upper management did not seem the least bit remorseful. The way it was handled was terrible.

Pros

They are very considerate and willing to work around your schedule They have an an easy to use online scheduling system where you can manage your schedule You can accumulate points every time you arrive to work on time, you can use these points anytime you call out or arrive to work late. Employees are given the freedom to make decisions on price changes, returns, exchanges, etc. (with good reason) Very little micro-managing. Managers are always walking around the store but rarely stay inside your department. Many employee incentives are provided, such as daily prizes, competitions, etc. Management is very respectful and considerate of their employees. Employee discounts are 20% and sometimes 30% or 40% on certain days. Very low pay.

Cons

Store is often under staffed. It can be frustrating when store gets busy and there are not enough associates there to help customers. Management is sometimes hard to reach. Now their extension goes straight to AST. You really need to have a good reason to get in contact with a manager. Management is slow and disorganized. Don't bother to ask them to do something for you, they take forever to get something done or forget to do it all together. There is no training program for new employees. New hires are put on the floor and expected to learn everything without proper training. There is not enough training for all employees on product knowledge. Many employees cannot find important information about their products in their department. Even department managers have very little knowledge about the products in the department they manage. Sales goals are sometimes impossibly high on slower days, impossible to achieve. They put too much pressure on employees to open credit accounts.

Pros

I learned a lot about retail and how to be a manager. Not from my manager but from my account coordinator and the other managers. I worked in cosmetics so the best thing was Free makeup and of course the friends I made. Other than that nothing was really great. You do get a discount of 20% but u have to have a macys card in order to receive the discount and if u don't already have one or are not approved you will get a prepaid. And take my advice even if u have good credit just ask for the prepaid so you don't get out of control because the interest rate is like 29% or something so if you don't pay your balance off in full each month you are actually owing them money. Funny right!!!

Cons

First thing is you have to open credit. Which isn't bad until they want you to basically shove the card up the customers you know what. Customers who shop there a lot think they are entitled to a discount or free stuff every time. If you work in cosmetics you will have to presale for free gift. Which basically means you have to call tons of people a month or so before the gift even starts just to tell them about it. And if you don't make your presale goal which is a couple thousand dollars you will definitely hear it from your manager, the store manager, your acct coordinator, acct executive, pretty much everyone in charge of you. And then they will tell you that you will have to work extra hard to make the actual gift number which is another couple thousand dollars. Working in makeup is not as fun as it sounds. Take my advice and work for MAC even if it is in a macys because I am pretty sure they run there own business and don't have to answer to the managers or get credit. The hours suck here too. You pick your preferred day off which can only be a weekday and you rarely get the day you want off. You have 3 unavailable days per month that you can enter in advance in the system. You also get so many points for basically coming to work and being there on time. You lose a half point for coming in late, 1 point lost for any weekday called off, and 2 point lost if you call off a sat or sun. You work about 2-3 nights per week. And on one day sales the store is usually open til 11. You also work a lot of weekends If you have any plans for the holidays with your family you should just cancel them now because your life will be macys all of November and December. You can not use any unavailable days during those 2 months. And I know in 2013 they opened at 8pm on thanksgiving day and I hear they are opening at 6pm in 2014. So tell your family not to have turkey dinner to late because you will have to be at work at 5:30pm on thanksgiving. YUCK. I bet Terry Lundgren (Macys CEO) will be enjoying his time off though at home in front of a cozy fire dreaming about how much money he will be making on Black Friday. Anyway I could go on all day about how this company does you wrong but to sum it up I would never work for this company again.
