Pros

Mattel is a great place to learn the business of product development, marketing and sales. Their huge organization allows for one to find quality advice and expertise from many different types of people. Mentors abound as numerous people have been there for "years". Because Toys are an entertainment product the turnover on products is massive 80-90% of their products are at least partially new each season. This creates allot of opportunity in Design, Engineering, Marketing and Sales.

Cons

Sr. Management is awful. They have no direction and runt he business through their review mirrors. Innovation died when Bob Eckart walked in the door. Additionally advancement at Mattel is awful. If and when a good opportunity arises they almost always fill it from the outside. They do nothing to develop their people and get them ready for these opportunities. Their is a glut of older middle and senior managment holding on to positions that need to be opened up for the next generation. There are too many people trying not to loose their jobs rather then trying to make an impact.

Pros

Mattel has a phenomenal benefits package which includes medical, dental and vision. They recognize numerous holidays and introduce their floating holidays to fill in the gaps. They also organize loads of after-work activities for the employees. The atmosphere is a lot like family or school. Everyone is very nice and has a great story behind them.

Cons

There is very limited mobility within the company. You could be stuck in the same position for 5 to 10 years.

Pros

They have very good development tools for lower levels of the organization. They have an excellent learning facility with a series of classes running all year long. Great opportunities to advance and rotate jobs and roles at lower levels of the organization. Mattel has been considered a great place to start your career - and then leave to go to another company at a much higher compensation level.

Cons

As you climb the ladder at Mattel, there is a bottle neck of people at the mid-manager, low level executive level. These people seem to be lifers and have taken up key roles in the organization. compensation is below other companies as well.
