Pros

Everyone that comes to Medvet comes for their love and compassion for animals and the desire to make them better. It's not a glamorous job by any means, but we do it because we love it. Because of this shared passion, co-workers become like family and clients with their pets are treated like an extension of the family.

Cons

Every family has skeletons and Medvet is no exception. What clients see and the image Medvet tries to convey is VERY different behind the scenes. No one starts there because they're going to make a great living. Medvet plays on our compassion by using it against us with guilt, blame, and condescension. Want to have a life outside of work? "But we're short staffed and your team needs you." Find a mistake and bring it to light or correct it? " You failed to act sooner, and whether it's your fault or not, and despite the positive outcome from a potentially dangerous situation, here's your write-up." Have a legitimate complaint and present it with a solution? "Thanks for your feedback.....*crickets* but that all just sounds like your making excuses for your role in the problem". I've never worked in a place that puts so much emphasis on employee satisfaction but then does everything to make them unhappy. It's like being in an abusive relationship. People are coming to work with dread in their stomachs and leaving in tears. But hey, they value us.... See, they got us a cake....? I won't go into patient care because the majority of us do care, but that care is a huge load to bear when management doesn't help you carry it.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. Your review made me feel sad. I know that our leaders in Cincinnati truly do want to improve the work environment, and we are seeing some positive movement in our survey scores. That said, I know that everyone has their own unique experience. I like to understand more about what's at the core of you or others feeling dread or or lack of respect. I'm not sure if you're comfortable talking to your local leaders, but I would ask that you reach out to Julie or to me (Maura) in HR so that we can learn more specifics. We will absolutely keep the conversation confidential. I came to MedVet about a year ago to try to make us a better place to work – that's my purpose, but we do need to hear directly from you to take action.

Pros

MedVet has a positive culture - my colleagues put our values of teamwork, leadership and compassion into action every single day. Promoting the integrity of Veterinary Medicine is paramount. Clients and their veterinarians entrust us with caring for pets in challenging situations and I respect the way our healthcare teams pull together to do everything we can. It can be heartbreaking work at times. Team members are incredibly gentle and caring with patients and their families. MedVet is investing energy and resources into supporting our team members to counter compassion fatigue and to ensure that everyone has what they need to provide the right care. Benefits are great and this company strives to create a culture where team members feel heard (we are in the midst of our second employee engagement survey). We began to provide a more formal leadership development program in 2018 and it will be exciting to see how this translates into daily operations in 2019 and beyond.

Cons

We have grown a lot in the past couple years and there are of course some pains along the way as we work to ensure a uniform experience across all hospitals. Standardizing practice is important to ensure a consistently positive experience but there is resistance to that idea sometimes. Communication has been challenging - some employees do not have a sense of the work that is being done to support our culture and have not yet felt the impact.

Thank you for taking the time to write. We are making a lot of investments -- and it does take time for some of them to pay off. We will stay the course and work to be even better!

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review. We do have lots of opportunities here for hands-on learning, with a lot of folks who are true experts in the field. Since we are 24/7, we do require folks to work some holidays. We know the work is emotionally taxing, and are doing things to help support our employees mentally as well as physically.
