An Incredibly Dysfunctional Company

Pros

Coworkers: Many of the employees are passionate, hard working, and intelligent. They believe in and are proud of the work they do. Education: The company will expose and force you to learn new technologies, business practices and fields.

Cons

Attrition and Morale: Large amount of employee turnover due to bad management and the workplace environment. Instead of treating the cause, management treats the symptoms. Leaving employees must sign a contract specifically forbidding negative reviews on Glassdoor if they want to have their remaining vacation time paid out. Employees "disappear" as they are often told by their manager to keep their two weeks notice private from their coworkers and not damage company morale. Uncertain Future: The company is constantly pivoting on products and features. Many new products are announced with claims that it will be the next big thing and will cement MedBridge's position in the market, then a rushed development schedule kicks off with incomplete designs, impossible deadlines, and conflicting management. After a frantic development and release the product will be promptly forgotten and end up either broken or discarded. Compensation: Base salary is below average, no yearly bonuses, low amount of stock options, and 401k matching is abysmal. Work Environment: "Startup Culture" or "Startup Mindset" is used as an excuse for many of the dysfunctional and bad practices pervasive in the company. Unrealistic work schedules, working from home is forbidden, undefined work processes, and employees are often assigned multiple unrelated roles. Incredible amount of office politics with managers making disparaging remarks and cursing out employees openly. Experience: Most of the workforce is under 30 if not 25. For many including the managers it is their first job out of college. The lack of experience is abundantly clear with how teams and projects are managed. Timelines and goals for teams are undefined for one month, much less three months in the future.

Great product, (mostly) great people, BAD management

Pros

The product is great, and the employees really do care about the mission. If you're looking for a short term position to build your resume, this place is great. If you stand out as a strong employee, you will quickly be promoted to a position that you aren't really qualified for. Additionally, the company has upped their game in the benefits department over the last couple years -- they have a 401k plan with matching, decent healthcare benefits, and an employee assistance program. Time off: PTO starts at 10 days (meh), 7 sick days (par), and parental leave of 2 weeks (better than nothing, and understandable for a startup).

Cons

Compensation: Salaries are pretty far below market, especially given that there is no bonus opportunity for regularly salaried employees. The management is inexperienced at best, and the team suffers for it. This company badly needs strong leaders who understand how to manage people. Senior management does not understand that it is possible to understand the product, the industry, and the company, and still be terrible at managing people. They also do not prioritize hiring of experienced managers. As a result, there is almost no middle management in existence, and more than half of the employees report to a single individual, who happens to be 25 years old and lacks the subject matter expertise to manage most of these teams. A lot has been made of the management issues in the last few years by employees (both through direct complaints to management/HR and on Glassdoor), but there has been little to no action to address the problems. Rather than lean in, really listen to the complaints, and address them in a thoughtful and meaningful way, the CEO pushes out anyone that challenges him and/or makes it known that they disagree with him. It is clear that senior management does not trust their employees. There is a lot of micromanagement, and definitely an expectation that employees should be working 'round the clock - the strongest employees are stretched incredibly thin, to the point that it's irresponsible. However, there is no bonus opportunity for regularly salaried employees, so it's easy to get burned out really quickly and to feel underappreciated. Be prepared to self-manage, and don't be surprised if you feel like management is just trying to squeeze every last ounce of productivity out of you. They probably are.

Pros

Nice, hard working, motivated people (not management)

Cons

Management is all "the good old boy's club." This was a startup just a few years ago. When I came on, they must must have come into some money as they were hiring at least 2-3 people every 2 weeks or so. And at least that many people were leaving monthly. So they were growing but not retaining many new hires. The reasons were clear from the get go for me, but didn't affect me until almost 2 years into working there. Their management was arrogant and inexperienced across the board. They tried hiring on really experienced people, but would either fire them or push them to quite if they suggested doing anything better than the status quo.
