Beware the BS

Pros

Deep insight into the fashion industry (however you will probably lose your passion for it in this environment) Some incredible people (very very few though, most all have already or will be let go)

Cons

Low pay, no raises, no bonuses, lying and passive aggressive lack of communication at every level. The majority of the people working there are white, privileged, independently wealthy, (so there’s no pressure for fair wages) power hungry, and set in their own ways of one note ideas that reflect their own lives. There is no room for out of the box thinking, personal or company growth, real solutions to problems, or even the time of day from most leadership. This company was created by privilege, for privilege, and has wrecked havoc on any sense of change, creativity, innovation or collaboration. They have no respect for their employees or their business partners. Working here made me question my own morals, stripped me of a personal life and sense of self, and took the joy out of working in fashion. I have learned an incredible amount about myself through working at moda, mostly all the ways that I was too blindly dedicated and worked too hard for nothing, because things never get fixed there. The long hours, late nights, early mornings, sacrificing your own life are never enough, the work never ends and you’re pushed to go harder and do more endlessly, with no additional compensation, title change or even respect. They are committed to maintaining the status quo or reaching for greatness beyond their means and their employees are the ones who face the repercussions of their bad judgment and poor decision making. Working here and then ultimately leaving moda will make you make a personal vow to yourself to never let a company suck the soul and life out of you ever again in the future. I don’t regret my time spent there because I have grown immensely through those hardships, but I do not wish that fate on anyone else.

Main Punchline: Terrible management, bifurcated diversity, and extremely low employee morale For anyone questioning the integrity of Moda Operandi, there is an enlightening article on Moda's operational history published in November 2020. You can access this article by typing in the following query in your preferred Search engine: airmail the devil sells prada My interactions with the founder are always pleasant although I, admittedly, didn't work directly for her. Her direct reporting team always seemed happy (albeit all of them were white females). The current CEO is another story altogether. I find him to be very shady and has a historically questionable reputation industry-wide. I am baffled why he’s still in that position (and how he even secured it given his reputation). His original intent was to ignore Moda's operational issues (payment processing and supply chain defects) and bring the company public. That reinforces his questionable character as future shareholders would have suffered terrible losses if his strategy succeeded. That misguided moral compass is consistent with his character. The terrible working conditions (flies, roaches) were spot-on. The only exception was the offices of the founder and C-suite (which were very well-kempt and beautifully decorated). That dichotomy reinforced the haves-vs-have nots ethos pervasive in the organization. The other thing the article missed was that senior level positions were largely held by Indians (and is not the all-white company the article implies). I have no problem with Indians holding top positions but it does create issues with diversity if the vast majority of individuals at the decision making level are all Indian. The organization has a chasm of either hiring Asians for technical roles, white people (in middle management roles) or Indians (in senior management roles). Unfortunately, senior management ignored the numerous studies have demonstrate that diverse cultures are more successful. .
