Pros

Low pressure environment. Work from home possible indefinitely.

Cons

The pay is low and decreasing relative to other employers. Management is using covid-19 as an excuse not to pay people despite continued profitability and increasing executive salaries. Would strongly recommend seeking alternative employers, moving, or contracting. Definitely not a place to make a long term investment in your career. Morningstar is SO far from the perks of a leading tech company. No on-site gym, no gourmet chefs, no on-site childcare. Also, the financial upside (if this was ever a possibility) isn't going to come from stock options.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. It sounds like you are disappointed with your experience and I want to take a moment to address some of your concerning feedback and statements around Morningstar’s response to COVID-19 and compensating employees fairly. COVID-19 has created a lot of change over the past year such as moving a global workforce to remote working and constantly adapting to uncertainty in today’s tumultuous political and economic climate. But despite these challenges, Morningstar, along with executive leadership, have been intentional to weather the storm by keeping our people connected through regular updates, providing resources and support, and maintaining our workforce when many other organizations have been forced to make tough decisions. In fact, we’ve seen the highest level of satisfaction across the organization because of our response to COVID-19. You’re right, Morningstar isn’t like Amazon or Google. We’re different. But that’s what makes us special too. We’ve never been about following trends and what’s popular – we set our own path and look for like-minded and passionate, talented individuals to join us on that journey. Maybe that’s why so many investors look to us. If you would like to continue this conversation, please reach out to AskHR@morningstar.com.

Pros

The office location is nice (downtown Chicago). The CEO is great, as expected for a mid-sized company.

Cons

Low pay, micro-managing people, overtime with no pay. Hopeless intern project, no feedback even when asked for repeatedly. To be fair, the project and micro-managing could be team-dependent, but the HR attitude is something to look out for. They don't care about their people unlike what they claim their values to be. Some of the senior leadership is just straight up incapable. A lot of corporate politics. Take this only if this is your last option, and by no means should you get excited on joining Morningstar.

Your feedback is very disconcerting. I%E2%80%99m so sorry to hear your experience at Morningstar missed the mark. Providing our interns with an enriching experience is at the core of our Internship Program and it sounds like your experience didn%E2%80%99t measure up to that. Your comments about your team being micro-managed is not characteristic of the experience we aim to foster at Morningstar. %E2%80%9CEntrepreneurial Spirit%E2%80%9D is one of our values and something we encourage company wide. It sounds like this wasn%E2%80%99t reflected on your team and that%E2%80%99s disappointing. One of the great things about our internship program is the opportunity for college students and recent graduates to gain real experience on a variety of projects that will be applicable in their first professional role. Many of our interns decide to apply for the Morningstar Development Program and join Morningstar full-time after graduation. Thank you for taking the time to share this review. Though disappointing, we hope you will reach out to us at AskHR@Morningstar.com to share more about your experience so we can better understand what went wrong and improve where needed.

Pros

If you get the right manager you have a really good opportunity to learn and grow.

Cons

HR could use some re-evaluating. Generally project manager have little experience in the work done by the people they are managing, so they don't lead teams down the right directions. When things go wrong they are first to point fingers, when the only contribution they have made is organizing/planning and making last minute requirement changes. Senior management makes middle management feel like there is a lot of chaos and organizational disfunction, so employees have little trust in what their managers say because it could vastly change quickly. There is also hints of discrimination from upper management, they hide behind the fact that the new CEO is a person of color.
