Pros

Great colleagues who are very supportive for the most part (there can be some rogue personalities but for the most part everyone is very nice and smart. There is a lot of freedom to try different projects and explore things as long as you get manager buy in. Some of the offices are beautiful (some still have a 90s vibe). Sabbatical is great! Time off policy is very flexible. In general you have access to the best tools to do your job.

Cons

Going into this job you need to negotiate the highest salary you can get because that’s it. You might see a few cost of living increases over the years but apart from that the attitude is you get what you get, because of this staying long term at the company is not really a good strategy if you are looking for competitive wages and growth. There is a lot of politics at play and regardless of whether you like playing or not you will be involved in them. There is an excuse and explanation for literally everything so if you call out discrepancies in pay, growth, ect there is always a very tight clean reason why you are wrong. It’s challenging because you can really like the mission, the work you are doing and your coworkers, but after a certain amount of time you have to believe the actions of management rather than the words (re: promotions). It’s not totally apparent but there is a slight lean towards promotions of men over women here. To get anything done you need to go through layers upon layers approvals.

Pros

No pros honestly. This place is fully toxic. I can’t think twice and think of why I joined this company. The CEO canceled twice on us while we’re still trying to meet and greet.

Cons

This company has no managment system. They have no product adoption and move up people who don’t deserve to be managers. Some manager are just not made managers and they can’t afford to manage a team or even motivate people but rather try to bring them down and play them. Not me sir. On another note, the CEO doesn’t care about investing into employees but rather care much about making money which is reasonable but at the same time think about your employees and put them at a high priority since they are serving the company. the Enviroment of this company is very unwelcoming, no sense of friendliness, no sense of leadership, everyone is lost at this company based on what I observed. Lastly, very old school. All of the people I met are arrogant. Very bad culture to be in.

Pros

- Bagel Wednesdays - Benefits (unlimited PTO, insurance) - Working for different branches of the company.

Cons

Morningstar Investment Management makes so much revenue for the company, and yet leadership treats it like an ugly stepchild that they absolutely refuse to pour necessary resources into. They built an excellent product, but failed in building the infrastructure to support it, and continue to fail in making up for it. My time at Morningstar was very short-lived, but I quickly saw how overworked, stressed, and how insane MIM's support team operates. What is worse is they stick MDPs in this department for a year, no better way to lose incredible fresh talent (and severely underpay them for the role). Management has gotten the feedback time and again that changes need to be made and more staff is needed, and as forward-thinking as Morningstar thinks they are, this old ship turns very slowly and is sinking. If you are considering a role at Morningstar, do not work for this team. It is non-stop chaos, angry financial advisors (because our processes are outdated, severely understaffed), and no one ever asks how you are, because they probably know the answer. After a few months of working here, I left because who wants to work for something that they see nothing but failure coming in the future? I can guarantee this role has caused many to need therapy after (that I wish I could bill them for), and Morningstar should honestly be ashamed of their Investment Management branch internally. On a 12 person team I worked with in 2019, today only 1 person is still there, that should tell you everything you need to know. Most of us quit.

We’ve been taking steps to improve processes throughout investment in technology and overall infrastructure with the ultimate goal to better support our people and our clients. We are actively listening to our team members to identify gaps to help us evolve in the future. We’re sorry that Morningstar wasn’t a good fit for you in this season of your career and your time with us, though short, wasn’t positive. We’re always interested in knowing how we can improve and make every effort to provide opportunities for employees to share their thoughts and feedback with us through a multitude of channels.
