A Mediocre Company

Business Outlook

Pros

-Some great individuals at company that are carrying the work load for the whole company. -a few products (ELD, dashcam, etc) have a really sound PMF which helps the company succeed in spite of some poor organizational decisions.

Cons

- Relationships matter more than good work. It doesn't matter how well you do your job, it's who you know at Motive. This leads to mediocre work with little accountability from managers and c-suite. -Performance reviews are performative. No real substance or critical feedback is given at this company. Your manager will check a box and try not to rock the boat. -Get ready to work side-by-side with bloated job titles/salaries for folks with little-to-no responsibilities. -The company is full of "gotchas". Example: Only join this company around these dates: December 15, March 15, June 15 and Sept 15. These are the dates that RSUs are vested. If you join Jan 1, 2023 your first year vesting cliff is actually 15 months because they vest on March 15, 2024 versus your start date. -Lack of strategy and top down vision. This company has performed 3 layoffs in 3ish years. If you like your leadership to always chase shiny new objects or copy their competitions' roadmap, this is the place for you.

Pros

Remote work and potential IPO

Cons

Possibly the worst company for women. Time and again women with talent and a voice are shut down or let go. Founders need lot of coaching. Investors and board should take note of how toxic the founders are and demand change.

Difficult environment to get things done

Business Outlook

Pros

Product is strong, and customers are successful. Growing space and interesting technology. Smart coworkers who want the company to be successful.

Cons

Processes that actively discourage work from getting to the finish line. Both procurement and marketing project/ campaign work was opaque and overly engineered. Multiple intake forms required and very easy to get stuck in a black hole if something was missing. Case in point: it took 9 months post-rebrand to get press releases added to the website. Lastly, treating employees with respect is important. It’s hard enough to get laid off, but it’s made harder when no one tells you directly (my manager has also been laid off so no one even called me, they just turned off all my access). There are open positions I’m qualified for but there was no discussion whether I could fill them. They only waited a month before advertising they were looking to fill my exact role again (with a more junior hire, but frankly at a contractor rate they will probably be paying more than what they were paying me). Extremely short sighted. Noting that many of those laid off had been there just under a year, with their first options about to vest, it seemed targeted to reduce this specifically.
