Pros

Fellow staff members are a joy to work with, things generally feel fun, supportive, and cooperative. They really make the job worthwhile. Positive interactions with owners and pets can be really rewarding, feels good to make a difference in their lives and share your knowledge. Management is slightly more lax than other retailers, will make accommodations, and leads show they want to help you succeed.

Cons

Underpaid for the work and expertise that is needed. Not only do you have the challenges of a typical retail job (which are underpaid as-is) but need to learn in-depth knowledge on pet nutrition, health, and behavior as well as a huge catalogue of different foods and products. This knowledge base is extremely valuable and employers should be paying more to keep well-educated staff on board. On the corporate side there is a lot of emphasis on expansion instead of investment in existing stores and staff. Occupational hazard of poorly behaved dogs which although rare can be very stressful.

Enjoyable Job, But Not What It Used To Be

Pros

- Bringing pets to work - Seeing ALL the dogs (and occasional cats) all day - Talking and learning about products and nutrition - Depending on the store, work environments can be laid back and casual - Some freedom to merch sections of store however you and your team think would work best for your location - Compared to other retail, stores and leadership are understanding of individual needs when it comes to calling in sick, emergencies, etc.

Cons

- Very high workload compared to pay - As you move up in the company the pay:workload disparity gets larger - Takes a painfully long time to let go of people that are toxic to workplace environment/just not cut out for the job - Not enough communication from the home office/executive team - Expectations do not always align with workplace values, especially in busier stores

So-so.

Pros

Good discount if you have your own fur babies.

Cons

Work/life balance is not their strong suit. Pay could be better considering you need to have an entirely open schedule to be a lead or manager.
