      Saying you work at NASA is better than actually working there

      Pros

      If you are into the next frontier, then this is definitely the place to be. You get to be a part of our most coveted source of scientific advancement, and people respect you for it. I can't imagine a place where I would get more oohs and ahhs about where I work, but perhaps thats just my crowd of friends. More importantly, you get to work on really cool technology, often times pushing the boundaries of whats currently possible.

      Cons

      The downsides include comparatively low pay, given what normal Silicon Valley companies pay for an intern. Additionally, there's a very distinct culture there, and if you fit in, you fit in, and if you don't you don't.

      Pros

      There is no place like a research center for being able to do creative and rewarding work. We get to work on new and interesting missions. There is really rocket science to be done here. There is no reason to get stuck in any position or field of research for life: However if you are doing good research, you should be able to make a case to do it for as long as you want. There are lots of missions that need new and groundbreaking technology, and it is very satisfying to see your work make a true impact. You get to work with absolutely incredible and creative minds.

      Cons

      Yearly budget cycle and political realities make long-term research an even more challenging goal. At one point, it seemed that we were rivaling professors for having to write proposals and bring in grants. Starting salaries are not as good as in the private sector, but upper level positions can be competitive, especially when you factor in negative profit sharing and the job instability in this down market. New civil service positions are far and few between, and contractors have better job stability than in the outside market, but not as good as a traditional civil service slot.

      Pros

      The management! They are very easy to work with. The are truly caring and allow for time off if and when you need it. They also don't micromanage their employees

      Cons

      The drive. The location is out in the middle of nowhere and you have to pass two security check points. The drive in the morning isn't too bad, not much traffic but there definitely isn't anyplace to live that's truly close to the facility. And you really can't go off site to eat lunch since everything is to far away to get back in a timely manner. The cafeteria is very old school and dated.
