Decent Organization, All Things Considered

Pros

Worked as Construction Manager; review for folks working in construction and construction contracting. - Great job security. - Real ability to work overseas; you really CAN go to Japan, Singapore, Bahrain, etc... if there is a Navy or Marine Corps base, there is NAVFAC. - Wide variety of projects. - Decent people overall.

Cons

- Will not learn design engineering at NAVFAC; they contract out practically all design work. - Terrible employees are extremely difficult to fire. Several employees are under qualified, but once they are in, that is it. - Pace of work varies, but can be heavy. - You do eventually work for Naval Officers; not exactly a CON, but just remember, it is a military organization staffed by 95% civilians. - Way too much EEO, sexual harassment, non-sense politically correct trainings. - You'd be surprised how low budget the government is, in some places you have to vacuum the office, the office is 50+ years old, it takes two months to get computer access, IE is version 6, etc...

Pros

Good pay, interesting projects, flexible work schedules

Cons

Top heavy/too bureaucratic, too much micro management/no employee empowerment, little to no awards or recognition of employees, little to no janitorial services (carpets haven't been vacuumed in 18 months, scientists/engineers have to take out the trash and vacuum their own carpets), don't have the equipment, supplies, training, and staffing needed to do a good job for the client, NAVFAC jumps from one crisis to the next, clients and top management thinks NAVFAC is arrogant and our quality of service sucks per recent CO staff meeting, continual cuts to field staffing, etc.
