Challenging place to work at for the wrong reasons

Pros

Work from home flexibility, 8-5, predictable schedule, standard federal benefits which can be better than the private sector, decent pay. Chance to help do great things for the Navy and get recognized for it.

Cons

I've never seen an organization set itself up for failure like NAVFAC: - Navy customers are very demanding (rightfully so, some have 50+ year old buildings with failing systems that never get fixed) and there is never enough resources to fix their issues. After some time you get tired of having to explain over and over the funding issues the organization has "sorry you have to live with a roof leak since 2015 but we still don't have money to fix the issue". - Management is BAD. Some employees do their job if they feel like it and there's no consequences for bad performance or for just being lazy. - HUGE communication problem even within the same department. Direction will be given from management and the workforce never get the word. Deadlines are missed because of this. - High turnover of the organization's leadership makes it difficult for any real and substantial change to happen. - Some "engineers" would never make it on the outside. Basic design flaws that ends up wasting tax payer's money and delays construction schedules. Again, no one is held accountable for this. - Many of the staff heavily rely on military personnel to make decisions that should be made at their level. It seems some people like being micromanaged. No incentive for innovation/decision making. - Inconsistent directions, and expectations confusses employees/wastes people's time. - The amount of waste I've seen in this organization is surreal. - Blatanly obvious some people are just in to make the bare minimum and collect a paycheck and retire with a pension (typical fed stereotype). - Some people are grossly underpaid for the work they do. The opposite is also true.

Leadership gets in its own way

Pros

good work/life balance. There is a strong focus on health and well-being. Get a sense of connection between the work you do, and how it contributes to the mission. Culture and values are at a level acceptable for this type of professional organization.

Cons

* No outside-the-box thinking. Strict adherence to procedures and processes, despite more efficient and effective ways available, due to fear. * Managers and subordinates clearly given the responsibility, but not the authority. * Military organization with command-and-control structure; and therefore, micro-management is prevalent throughout. Civilians can't act or make a decision without first having gone through first, second, third tier, and sometimes higher within the chain-of-command. * Senior management strives to blindly check the boxes or change the questions to get the answer they want. * Very limited opportunity for advancement - pigeon holing * Compensation is as advertised (so can't really complain). But, if looking to make good money, this is NOT the place. Organization is horrific when it comes to bonuses, awards and quality step increases (QSI). * The counter-balance for items listed above used to be job security and benefits, and should expect that to be listed in "Pros." But job security and benefits are constantly under threat from sequestration, furloughs, pay-freezes, and threats by various administrations to cut or change benefits such as pension plans (hence the low rating I gave for comp. and benefits). So, the job is starting to reflect what private companies do, BUT without the associated higher pay. * Almost forgot - training, training, and more training, and not on anything that helps you do your job better - but is probably in line with what you would see at other large organizations (maybe a little bit more).

Pros

You can relocate to great places throughout the world

Cons

Top heavy, disorganized, every customer you work with rightfully hates your organization, the organization’s yearly kudos is how much money it spends, run by engineers who have zero engineering experience, their solution is to hire more employees when the problem is all the requirements it puts on itself, it is agreed upon by the majority of employees that the organization you work for is it’s own worst enemy, management is powerless to get rid of bad employees, had some of the worst managers I’ve ever seen (I mean laughable)
