Pros

Good mission and collegial place to work. Excellent news product delivering comprehensive and well documented local, national and international news. Very much needed in a media world where major media companies are cutting back on their news resources. Highly skilled and committed staff.

Cons

Disfunctional governance structure has led to an inability to keep senior executives. NPR has had 7 full-time and interim CEO's over the past 8 years which has led to consistent turmoil at the top.

Pros

Employees get a lot of freedom and flexibility in our work lives. As a reporter, this is a 'reporter-driven' shop where your ideas can get a hearing. The newsroom values respect and kindness, so there's little of the competitive or back-stabby culture that can be common at national news organizations. The new building fosters a lot of collaboration and moments of random delight — taking a spin class overlooking the U.S. Capitol, catching a national act like Macklemore or The National give an intimate Tiny Desk Concert on the 4th floor or grabbing a coffee with a good friend on the outdoor terrace.

Cons

The HR software is hopelessly outdated and frustrating. Because it's an organization that grew quickly, there's a lack of cohesion among the various departments and units sometimes. Leaders are individually strong, but haven't been clear in communicating the organization's core objectives and how each department can align themselves toward similar goals. Adherence to certain processes under-utilizes some talent and doesn't force quick change.
