Pros

With all the expenditure going into the railways at the moment there are plenty of opportunities for engineers (at the moment) and I feel that the pay is good.

Cons

Decision making within the organisation can be painfully slow at times. There are too many processes, rules and standards (excluding those related to safety) - more than in a normal company - and these are so ingrained into some staff and are followed so rigidly that they seemed to be used in lieu of rational thought which stifles improvement in efficiency.
