Pros

It was a fun place to work with lots of intelligent people.

Cons

If you are white and male you will not be promoted unless you plead gay or some other minority. In the past there was a bias that favored straight white males over minorities and now there's an (over)correction. No matter how good my work was, or how praised it was I would always lose a promotion to someone from a more diverse background. I have a friend who is gay, but appears straight and he was locked as well. However, if you are black and female, strap n that rocket pack, because you are going straight to the moon!

Pros

All the engineers are super kind and want to be very helpful. Everyone will chip in and lend a hand. For engineering, work/life balance is great.

Cons

Everyone puts out very nice messages full of thanks and how everyone is a team and people should take it easy, but then gets very intense about “paying for performance”. It feels passive aggressive. Way too many meetings because everyone is given veto power over everything.

Pros

- Really smart engineers and product people, with a lot of empathy. - Incredible Work Life Balance, really flexible schedule depending on the team - The core mission of the company (producing great, informative, important journalism) can be very motivating. Not everything we publish resonates this way, but the work that does feels good to be a part of. - For the most part, I've felt pretty shielded from office bureaucracy/politics in my day-to-day (though I am aware it exists in some parts of the company)

Cons

- Upper Management often comes off as very disconnected, disorganized, and even antagonistic at times. - They don't pay as much as many other tech companies of similar size, which makes retention difficult and hiring to replace people very slow. The company insisted it planned to address that discrepancy--even at some point sending emails about pay raises across the board--but it never happened. Instead, they offered slightly larger RSU grants than normal to senior engineers and above only (still below the rate of peer tech companies they claimed they were comparing their compensation to)
