Pros

- Looks good on a resume. - They hire incredibly smart people, so ego boost - Everyone is incredibly passionate about their work

Cons

- Bullying/Mean Girls culture - Compensation is subpar and benefits very average. It was definitely not good enough to cover the therapy I needed to survive here. - Abusive environment will leave you traumatized and possibly in a mental hospital. - Managers are incompetent, do not set their directs up for success, provide no support and take credit for your work - Meetings on meetings on meetings with no time to get actual work done. - Too many people are required to make simple decisions, which means decisions don't get made and deadlines are frequently missed. - Very little opportunity for career advancement. Working at The New York Times is treated like the top achievement a person can get so there's no need to provide development or career pathing. - Very limited ways of thinking. New ideas are rejected to protect the way things have always been done. - If you're not "Timesian" enough, you will be outcast.

Pros

- Relaxed work culture - Good Benefits

Cons

- Low compensations. I would say you will end up making 20-30k less than the market. - Pathetic Promotion Process. Employees loud and clear shared their opinion through various mediums, union speeches, one-on-one meetings but leadership refuse to listen. If your manager is ready, why do opinions from other managers in the group matter in the decision? You as an employee never get an opportunity to work with other teams so how's that fair. Because of bad leadership, union forming is inevitable. - Technologies from the stone age and never get any upgrade. - if you are an H1B immigrant like me, I would suggest continuing looking somewhere else. Once you are in, exit is difficult. you will end up working in a lower role no matter if you have 10+ years of experience.

Pros

Location wise: it is in the middle of the city, and that's about it. Hopefully ill be able to say that I'm from NYTimes in my next job interview and get a salary hike, because at this point thats all this company is wort.

Cons

Horrible Management from the ground up. The Manager that i have to work with for my team is absolutely non professional, he curses screams and shouts any time things get critical. He Assigns un realistic deadlines. I believe this manager has a personality disorder. He has lost countless more than 10 DBAs in less than 2 years so far. Both MYSQL , ORACLE and MSSQL DBAs across the board. He is not a team player and scapegoats his employees for his shortcomings. I am stuck here until my Visa clears and there ill be out of here as soon as possible. Salary is below average here as well for the amount of man hours we all put in. When it comes to technology, NYTimes uses the cheapest solutions that cant handle the I/O operations that is required for an optimally performing database. As a DBA accepting this position has been by far the worst mistake in my career.
