Pros

You will meet some of the smartest, most knowledgeable and cultured people anywhere on the planet. There is a strong, shared sense of mission to the work, and there is pride in saying you work there. You should have the opportunity to do the best work of your career, and it will be seen by millions of people.

Cons

It is a large organization, so it can be hard to move the needle quickly or get buy-in for new ideas. Leadership is matrixed out, so not always easy to get quick and decisive decisions made. Maybe the pay and benefits are not on par with the Facebooks and Googles of the world.

Pros

Looks great on the résumé and it introduced me to a lot of new technologies my previous job did not. Also met some great people.

Cons

The department is mostly lifers and are rotten people that take advantage the balkanized hierarchy. The boss is not interested in developing talent because there's no room to grow and the slackers are protected by the union.

Pros

The company is filled with great people who are all very smart. It can be a great place to start projects and collaborate with the best in the business.

Cons

Hierarchy is sometimes unclear, and what makes it possible to find opportunities can also make it difficult to get things done. Managers at the company definitely play favorites and don't have much loyalty to employees. Frequent rounds of lay offs.
