Bizarre Workplace, Bleak Outlook

Pros

The only positive things about Newsmax are the employees. There are some truly talented people who work/worked here. The downside here, though, is that all (yes, all) of those people are desperately seeking employment elsewhere or are demoralized. It is a sea of empty desks, with a few remaining worker bees trudging through their days, taking on the tasks of those who have quit or were terminated. I do not know ONE employee who is not currently and frantically looking for other jobs - excluding management personnel, who are all tightly aligned with the CEO.

Cons

The two biggest problems (nightmares?) at Newsmax are vision and culture. This is a strange company with leadership that appears to think only in terms of what was popular 20 years ago. There is a push to grow, but no strategy, no resources, and no support. The “eggs” are in the TV basket, but revenue from other departments cannot sustain the albatross - this is the CEO’s dream, but it is one that can’t and won’t ever be realized. Everyone suffers, as a result. The culture makes this an abysmal workplace. There doesn’t seem to be any sort of ownership of the oppressive issues that plague Newsmax: little to no acknowledgement of personal lives, denied PTO, zero backup and zero support, overwhelmed middle management, shrinking budgets, clear preferential treatment of some employees over others. The vision and the culture are just an endless loop. This is why great people leave, new people are quickly deterred, and we will never be able to regain the stamina that Newsmax almost had at one point. Worse yet, the CEO must approve of EVERYTHING, from small expenditures to rewrites. This is daily. And he frequently travels, so he’s out of reach. No one is empowered to make decisions, not even other, C-level managers. Making a decision without his input could cost you your job. As someone who has worked for decades in the industry, I think that this is absolutely unreal.

Pros

Mostly nice people, either at very beginning or very end of their unremarkable careers.

Cons

Everyone is continually afraid of losing their job, and they will because no one lasts longer than a few years. The quality of the website and TV has deteriorated as workers keep getting cut, while managers sit around doing nothing. There are too many people in charge, telling too few workers what to do. You can tell how desperate the people who do nothing are to prove their importance by how much they tell others what to do. It's a big charade.
