Pros

Benefits are very good for a retail company

Cons

This used to be a great company to work for some of the people in the department have been there for 10+ years. After the pandemic started things went downhill when they had salespeople, managers and new hires do our job to “help out”. We got our hours cut for months and after a couple of weeks of getting out 40 hours again they were cut AGAIN so they could bring temp people in so they could get their 40 hours and we could train them. This because they pay them less so you’re hurting is to save yourself a couple of dollars. When the NY store opened they flew and paid for most of the managers to go for the event while back home we were getting hours cut and that was disgusting. While the whole store is being constantly rewarded and applauded for their sales we get absolutely no recognition. We bring in and send out everything you sell in the store and we get nothing. Our department works 24 hours during busy times and you get to leave early and have a life! It’s ridiculous to see how everyone gets gift cards, meals, freebies and we just sit there working non stop to “serve” you because you do see us as servants and we get nothing. Hey a free coffee would be nice!

Pros

On the selling floor you can make a lot of money if you’re good at selling. The people you meet in the store will become your family.

Cons

Nordstrom has created a very toxic environment over the years. It is a known fact within the stores and corporate that HR’s doors are locked and if you are able to contact them they will always direct you to call the HR service center. HR is commonly referred to “as a joke”. It is also known that HR will always side with leadership no matter what an employee presents in terms of proof of a claim. My experience in the stores was with a lot of diverse backgrounds and ethnicities. Yet my experience in corporate was that only Whites and Asians were favored with very few Latinos and Black employees. Most corporate employees have never worked in a Nordstrom store, which is contradictory to what Nordstrom portrays. It is almost impossible to go from a store to corporate. “They drank the coolaid” is a common term in the stores referring to employees who support negative leadership decisions. It’s very easy to get or feel stuck within this company. If you are a man within this company you are allowed to be aggressive but if you are a woman you will automatically be labeled as aggressive if you speak out against anything leadership says and will be “coached out”. Bonus: healthcare sucks!

Pros

Ok employee discount, but not the best in the industry

Cons

I left because I did not have support for promos in the buying office. I had the analytic skills needed to succeed in a buy planner career path, but wasn't supported by leadership because I wasn't "Nordstrom" enough. If you want to work somewhere where networking and rubbing elbows takes precedence over deliverables and skills, this is the place for you.
