Pros

Northern Trust is extremely open to people moving positions after one year in their role.

Cons

* Most areas of NT have extremely high turnover (in particular, IOO and HFS have about a 33% turnover per year). This creates debilitating issues in regards to morale and training. Most critically, for example, the team I started on had five managers quit in 1.5 years. * They never meet their bonus targets (e.g., up to 5% for Senior Analyst or up to 7% for Consultant). My first year at NT, they informed us that salary increases were on hold indefinitely and hiring was frozen indefinitely (even as people were leaving voluntarily, their roles were not filled). For bonuses, despite having an above-average review, I got a 1% bonus (I was eligible up to 5%); my second year, despite a promotion in title, I got a 1.8% bonus (I was eligible up to 7%). * If you have an issue with a manager, HR is NOT on your side. I filed a hostile work environment complaint against my direct manager, HR told my manager that I complained about him, and then I experienced extreme retaliation. My manager denied any wrongdoing and I was verbatim told that they were taking his word as truth over mine because he is a manager. (Note: this person has extreme turnover only with female staff and multiple women have complained to HR about him.)

Great benefits...that is all

Pros

Great benefits package. Received decent amount of vacation, sick, and "emergency days", as well as 401K and pension (who still does that?). But that is all.

Cons

I came in from the outside working over 25 years in the financial industry working for midsize to extremely large institutions. It is true that there is rampant nepotism and incompetent management. I have managed very large teams before and I could of ran circles around the person they assigned to manage the group. The company as a whole is adverse to change. High turn over of good people leaving the lazy lifers working for their pension. I actually had a potential employer tell me he would not hiring anyone with Northern Trust on their resume.

Pros

Basically none. I will say that on an analyst level, many coworkers are friendly, nice people. The team that manages the dow account actually is made up of some smart, good guys.

Cons

This review is specific to the institutional fund accounting team, I can't speak for the rest of Northern. There is absolutely no reason to accept a role with that team. Management is a Dilbert level of incompetent, the office actually functions better when they are not there. There is no room for career advancement. Pay is bad compared to the industry. The hours are terrible, it's not unusual for all the analysts to still be in the office past 9 PM. The job teaches no transferable skills. Everyone is trying to leave. Turnover in six months was above 50%. Upper level management is working on automating most of the department. Management does a terrible job communicating, I remember a coworker who had been there almost two years getting yelled at for approaching the bosses cubicle without sending an instant message first, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Things just get worse.
