Great Experience at NovaTech's Orion Office (Lenexa, KS)

Pros

Specifically to Systems Engineering: Friendly, small company environment Effective leadership within systems engineering group Work is not mundane and new challenges arise every day Produce a really cool technology product, on the cutting edge in its niche Pay is competitive, 401K and health benefits are OK, profit sharing package is nice You are not required to become a manager if you want to remain in design engineering The work life balance is very gracious -- a desire to minimize travel is respected Generally: Small company feel, proud of the product being developed. Orion division (in Kansas) is the most profitable NovaTech division Coworkers can be trusted

Cons

This is an engineering company first, and there are no two ways around it. Manufacturing and production technicians are not treated (by their managers) with the same respect as the engineers. The technicians are grossly undervalued and are not given much opportunity to advance (or move laterally into a different role in the company). The hardware engineering group is having some growing pains, and I have even seen a good engineer leave because one of the long-time (soon to retire) engineers would not share any work. A couple of the long time employees do not act professionally toward others.

Pros

*Small company feel *Very relevant in the utility automation industry -- day to day work makes a real difference for the company *Competitive pay *Systems Engineering is like a sandbox full of toys. I don't build it, sell it, or design it. I create original, customized solutions using NovaTech's products to *make* it work exactly how the customer orders it. That's just fun. *The culture and people are fun. No power trips here. *Jeans are OK! *Great place to come as an intern, developing engineer, or advanced engineer *Training is getting better and better. Learn at your own pace. *No "corporate ladder" to climb. Advance to management or just be an engineer. Both are OK

Cons

*No "corporate ladder" to climb means no opportunity for a six-figure salary some day. Some might call that a lack of opportunity for career advancement. *Employees usually start as "contract" for about 6 months before being hired as a full-time employee *Relaxed structure and minimal performance reviews is nice, but it also can negatively affect growth

A giant echo chamber

Pros

Slow paced environment. Relaxed atmosphere.

Cons

Everyone that works here has never worked anywhere else. Pay is extremely low for the area. They almost have their own language and anyone that isn't part of the A-team gets ignored. Benefits are absolutely TERRIBLE! They are extremely hostile to people with disabilities.
