Pros

• Everyone on the production and design team is competent and a pleasure to work with • The editorial director is great, I have a lot of respect for him and the way he operates • There can be good opportunities to travel • Depending on the title you work on, there is freedom to really own your product, and shake up the content

Cons

• The business is very hierarchical and messages were frequently passed through the levels – even if you’re sat next to the person to whom a message intended for you is being delivered. • In my team you were expected to work and behave in a particular manner – beware if you have a different approach to the rest of your team • The company tiptoes around certain members of staff, allowing them to get away with unacceptable, intimidating behaviour. You have the choice to put up with it, or make a formal HR complaint. It’s stressful. • My boss was generally unhelpful – no induction, no feedback, never gave clear instructions, little support for my title, used thing I said against me, many things seemed like a joke to him. Every day felt like a battle. • Inefficient team structures – expected to attend long meetings with pre-written agendas that have very little to do with your title • If you’re “in” with the powers that be then you’ll be ok, no matter what. Some people are happy to chuck anyone under the bus

Terrible management

Pros

Offers great products and events.

Cons

Management cares little for staff. Comments, suggestions, or feedback provided by staff are not taken seriously. There is no training, guidance, or appraisals offered to employees, so employees never have a sense of how they are performing, or areas in which they need to improve on. Salaries are low. There is poor interoffice communication which often leads to confusion, lack of consistency and a disconnect between all three offices. Promotions are seldom. There is a high turnover rate. Job responsibilities are often unclear and keep changing. Managers don't advocate for their staff. No proper direction is given on projects. Managers don't care if their teams are overworked. For such a small company, there are way too many micromanagers. Managers spend too much time focusing on employee weaknesses than strengths. I could go on, but I'll stop there.
