Pros

*Nice new office in Yaletown *Remote work is an option

Cons

PayByPhone fosters an immature and unprofessional work culture coupled with an extremely poor leadership workforce that lacks insight, maturity, skills and professionalism to lead teams and company. A company with an extremely poor track record of retaining staff beyond a year or two, largely because of poor pay, poor hiring practices and a very unhappy workforce, despite "having fun" being one of the company's core values. HR prefers to ignore the root causes of labor discontent by dismissing rampant resignations as "well, that's just the way it goes in the Vancouver tech industry," ignoring all the red flags that people are leaving not just because of that's the way it goes in the Vancouver tech industry but because they are utterly fed up with the disorganization and rampant mismanagement this company continues to foster, right from the very top (CEO left in the summer, along with another executive senior leader) to grassroots. There is no succession plan when people leave, and the way the gap is filled is to merely bump the next person up the ladder regardless of whether that individual is skilled to take on a more senior role, which they are not. And there is no attempt made to skill-up once a promotion is given. The individual just bumbles along, clueless, to much cheer and fanfare from the rest of the team. Teams are shuffled around like a card deck when individuals leave and scant regard is paid to hiring skilled, qualified, experienced and mature people to do the jobs that are constantly going vacant. Software developers, the backbone of building the company's one and only product. are constantly leaving. Every department is losing team members each and every month, anywhere from 5 to nearly 20. And still, the company continues to peddle the myth that that's how it goes in the Vancouver tech industry. The North American sales team is woefully inadequate and inexperienced in closing deals. They chase after nearly every RFP with very little success to show for the effort it takes to put these labor intensive documents together. Trumpets are blown when there's a very rare win. Crickets when time and time again the sales team loses an opportunity. Mindless, childish team games are played weekly in the name of having fun. If you are relatively inexperienced and want to get a toe hold in your profession, PayByPhone will do it for you for a year or two maximum. Get your experience and move on. If you are highly skilled and experienced in your field. DO NOT apply to work at PayByPhone. You will become bored and frustrated very, very quickly with the immaturity and lack of professionalism all round. There are better opportunities out there that will appreciate professionalism, maturity and skills. This company will work you hard and rebuke you if you raise your voice to offer improvements or advice. "Quiet quitting" is your best course of action until you can find a better gig to move on to.

Pros

Previous version of PayByPhone had a tight-knit community feel with upwards career trajectory and managers that would champion you.

Cons

The parent company karate-chopped all existing management in 2019 and turned PayByPhone into a corporate landscape. Most old employees soon followed as VWFS did its finest to destroy existing culture (and of course existing organizational and technical knowledge). Endless layers upon layers of new useless positions and managers in an ever increasingly complicated hierarchy. Organizational practices promoted the hiring of corporate-drone managers. Managers seriously overstepping into dictating coding practices 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘻𝘦𝘳𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨. Morale dropped significantly and has never returned. They now have 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 employee retention, exacerbated with raises 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. The turnover is so bad, they stopped announcing when people left the company. Imagine hitting up Slack to find an old coworker left the company 5 months prior without you knowing. Great for morale. Managers who would previously champion your career development left for far more lucrative positions. New managers fail to promote their teams upwards, leaving zero career development internally. Simultaneously they fail to shield their team from the trickle-down mess of this corporate environment. Meetings that last hours and hours and hours.

Thank you for your Review. We aim to continuously improve and input (positive and constructive) are needed to help us prioritize. For example, in support of your comments: this year we have refined our structures to have a flatter organization enabling faster 2-way decision-making and communication; we have implemented remote-first in response to employee feedback while having a fantastic new head office in Yaletown to inspire drop-ins for collaboration and fun; we continue to advertise new joiners and leavers both in the Weekly News Update, and bi-weekly on our company intranet, and in our monthly newsletter; we continue to hire leaders with relevant skills so they can teach and role-model for their team; and we have reduced meetings significantly and implemented a designated learning time every Friday. We encourage you to reach out to your Leader and/or HR Business Partner if you have more input to share as we are truly keen on listening so we may continuously improve.
