Pros

Great people. Lots of potential and opportunity for growth and contribution. Complex problems to solve across the organization. Well funded by Volkswagen Financial Services, while maintaining the energy and approach of a startup. The newly appointed President/CEO is engaged and excited about who we are and where we're headed. Good downton location in Yaletown.

Cons

Lots of change in the last year (acquisition, leadership, turnover), which has led to some chaos and growing pains. Some processes need defining or redefining.

Cons

PayByPhone was one of the most frustrating organizations I've ever worked for. The biggest issue wasn't the employees but it was the disconnect between leadership and REALITY. Instead of listening to clients and building solutions they were actually asking for, leadership repeatedly invests time and resources into products nobody wanted. When those initiatives inevitably underperformed, accountability flowed downhill to ALL frontline employees who were expected to somehow manufacture success from flawed strategy. The organization talks extensively about customer obsession, but many clients experienced the complete opposite. Internal teams are stretched far beyond capacity, resources were consistently insufficient, and employees were expected to deliver "award-winning service" without the staffing, support, training, or internal alignment required to do so. Training was largely self-directed. New hires were often left to figure things out on their own because even experienced employees struggled to get clear answers. Processes changed constantly, ownership was unclear, and operational knowledge was fragmented across the business. The compensation also lagged behind comparable roles in the market, making it impossible to justify the workload and expectations placed on employees. Perhaps most concerning was the culture around leadership. Frequent feedback from employees usually appeared to go nowhere. Many talented people left, stepped down from their roles, or were let go after raising concerns that were never meaningfully addressed. The message is very clear... protecting "leadership" matters more than retaining great people or supporting them in becoming successful in their role. I guess they enjoy turn over every 2 years... Meanwhile, ownership changed multiple times over a relatively short period, creating a constant cycle of new priorities, shifting strategies, and organizational uncertainty. Each new vision was presented as the answer, yet fundamental execution problems remained unresolved. An example would be having a product somewhat figured out before running and telling every single one of PayByPhone's important clients. What makes this especially disappointing is that there are genuinely talented, hardworking people throughout the company. Many of them care deeply about clients and work incredibly hard despite the challenges. They deserve better support, better leadership, and a clearer vision than what they've been given. I CANNOT recommend working here unless you're comfortable operating in an environment where employee wellbeing takes a back seat to optics, where strategy changes frequently, and where accountability is often unevenly distributed. To the good people still there: I sincerely wish you the best. You're the reason the company has succeeded as much as it has.
