Pros

- Great people on the ground that care (at least the ones that are left) - Brand new fancy office opening by late 2022

Cons

- Very old boys' club SLT with a top down org structure. Ground level workers have very little say and their opinions often go unheard. - Subpar salaries and benefits far below the current industry standard - High attrition rate - Tons of tech debt - dealing with tech debt is the current priority, without much forward vision about new product launches  - Very siloed departments and lots of chaos without developed processes - Brand new office digs means that full time remote work is probably going to be off the table in the future

Thank you sincerely for your review. Up until Fall 2021 we were in rapid growth-mode and with that came lots of excitement but also growing pains- we agree we had opportunities for improvement. To address these and stabilize our retention and improve work-life balance, in 2022 we have centralized our functions across North America and Europe with senior leaders from all locations meeting monthly to share and collaborate, fine-tuned our areas of focus (lesser OKRs and very disciplined collaborative quarterly and sprint planning across multiple divisions and inter-departmental teams), standardized our vacation program to 4 weeks for all to start, reviewed everyone’s compensation, introduced quarterly pulse surveys and focus groups for faster responses to current needs, mindfully back-filled roles, and introduced Remote-First while still enabling on-site collaboration from our Yaletown office. We are not done in our efforts to improve. We sincerely thank you for your contributions while with us and wish you the very best in your next adventure!

Pros

Despite sounding like it could be boring to work in the parking industry, it ended up being one of the most interesting industries to learn about. There was a lot to learn and many intricacies you never think about. Your main clients are district councils, which was always interesting to communicate with. Working here made me not super surprised at the handforth parish council meme that popped up in 2020 (okay maybe not that bad, but sometimes there's similarities) Working on content that goes out to local areas, as well as their meters for trees initiative made me feel like I was genuinely making a difference. Part of my role included lots of travelling, which was super unique in a job and I really miss it sometimes. The people working here are incredible. There is a good diversity in age and the conversations were always amazing. During the pandemic, the communication was still strong, and zoom calls were never ever quiet and felt exactly as it is when physical. Everyone around you are super supportive and tons of fun. There isn't a single person that I didn't get along with. Whether you're moving jobs or starting a new career, there's a lot of opportunity here.

Cons

The salary discussions are difficult here. For the amount of work I'm doing and the ROI I was creating, that salary is around 35,000k. Initially my role was very simple but I had a ton of new responsibilities. Despite good growth and prospects in Paybyphone usage through the pandemic, and working through it entirely, I was congratulated with a 1k payrise, which was slightly below inflation rates. Of course, this isn't a role in London so I can understand it, but it didn't change me at all. Because of the location and the distance of some employees commute, any socials are slim. There isn't a ton of pub outings, but the socials that do happen are very fun. It just doesn't happen very often.

Pros

- Strong and smart colleagues who I learn from everyday - Design maturity has leveled up quite a bit since starting here and there are processes in place to learn (new methods of research, collaborating with other departments, etc.) - CEO is open and addresses anonymous questions at bi-weekly Q&A

Cons

- Struggle to retain good talent

Thank you so much for your review. Totally agree with all the Pros you list. And yes, we have had some great talent leave after several years of wonderful mutual experiences with us. We are so pleased for their new adventures and equally for the new ideas our incoming talent are bringing. Thank you for your advice on transparently sharing our talent retention plans: in the first half of 2022 we have reviewed compensation, set vacation to minimum 4 weeks for all, moved to a Remote-First workplace per employee survey feedback, and are currently reviewing our total rewards program for more ideas. Equally, thank you for your advice on appreciation; so far, we celebrate successes through our global kudos channel and at our quarterly All-Hands, our quarterly Value Awards, our Milestone Anniversary program, and we recently celebrated in-person our successful integrated platform launch in each of our offices in Vancouver, France, UK, Germany and Italy. We think the prize for best celebration goes to the German team who started with a breakfast celebration, then a hike and then dinner! Thank you for your insights and we hope you continue to enjoy your time at PayByPhone!
