Pros

Working with dogs, forming close bonds with coworkers, tips

Cons

Not paid nearly enough for the level of work, prone to injuries, policies are changed to make job difficult with no explanation, constantly wet, broken equipment takes forever to be replaced if at all, disrespectful customers with no backup from managers, corporate forces bathers to overload their schedule

Pros

They train you hands on and in house which is great! Attention to safety and quality is high for most salons and managers. We get a chance to give pet parents proper education for their pets grooming needs. You can usually get cross trained to other departments no problem. Commission is a very good paying gig if you can consistently groom enough. It’s a very fulfilling job if you want to work with animals.

Cons

Lack of staff is seen as a “bump in the road” no matter how long. In my case, I was the only groomer AND a manager for 1 1/2 years. There was no urgency about it and the only advice I received was to do more work without a raise while still performing my core management duties. Management was extremely against learning duties of other departments. Stores are hesitant to work together and instead are at war with each other. I understand that stores are to compete in sales and other things but we’re still one company. Departments are also against each other. The higher management is also extremely stingy with pay for some roles. Work life balance is terrible if you’re dedicated to making your department work. Management doesn’t understand that your time off the clock is your time.

Pros

Stores not open too late so you get out at a decent time. There was not a large amount of resets (usually once a year) but not difficult to complete. Expectations from upper management for the most part were attainable.

Cons

As with most retail companies, you were expected to do more with less. Management was on the floor a great deal of time. Most staff (including key holders) are young and not reliable which meant managers fill in open shifts.
