Pros

Great employee discounts. Those who own dog or cats will save tons.

Cons

Those employees who don't know a lot of knowledge of pets send all customers to those who do and don't bother learning themselves. Health insurance could be better.

I Love My Job

Pros

I started as a part time cashier and in less than 5 years moved my way up to management. The opportunity to advance in this company is amazing if you work hard and work in the right district/region (if you feel like your store management is holding you back, check for promotion opportunities on petnet at other stores). The benefits are great, the discount is great, if you dedicate yourself to the job and customers the sense of pride you feel is like none other. You get to meet representatives from the companies that you sell, they are full of great information to help you help customers. Of course, it's retail...customer service has it's obvious drawbacks. But I would not trade my job for the world. I truly feel like I am part of a team when I am at my store. I don't wake up in the morning and think "I hate my job". I am thankful everyday for the opportunity I have to work for Petco.

Cons

Depending on your district/region, lack of effective communication from corporate management can be an issue. Too many chiefs, not enough indians. Also, they want all stores to be the same as far as basic policies go but they will let older stores completely fall apart while opening up new stores at the same time. Why not revamp older stores and provide more hours instead of opening up new stores and letting the old ones fizzle out?

Much work, little in return

Pros

Working with pets and pet parents can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. Employee discount is reasonable (which includes some free veterinary services). Bonuses are paid quarterly so you can be rewarded performance more fairly than being rated on the entire fiscal year at once.

Cons

Due to budgets constantly being reduced and positions being eliminated, there is no work/life balance as a Store Leader being you are the only salaried team member in the store. If there are any tasks that need to be completed you get to be the one to finish them. Low wages for Department Leaders cause much turnover (there are other jobs available that pay more for a non-management position than Petco pays for one.) You are constantly on the lookout to hire new Department Mangers because of this. The workload is constantly being increased while there is no increase and/or a reduction in payroll and staffing to accomplish the workload. Increased focus on services sales (grooming, dog training and veterinary services) are being pushed to ridiculous budgetary goals in an effort to make up for lost sales to the internet in stores. Fear is the primary motivator for reaching these goals because your job is now constantly on the line if they are not met.
