Pros

It's a cute job. Some of the people are nice.

Cons

They don't pay well. They will always side with the customer, even if the customer is a terrible person, or out of their mind, or stealing ,etc. The company does not care about you even though you are the person helping them make money.

Pros

Getting to help rescue groups and educate the public were huge draws for me. I enjoyed helping animals, getting to know their owners, and becoming part of the community. I was able to meet extraordinary people and see parts of the country I wouldn't have known existed otherwise. I was pushed outside of my comfort zone and was able to have adventures and learn about myself.

Cons

While they talk a good game, and there are genuinely lovely people in the company, there is much responsibility with very little support/training. Everything comes down to who is directly superior to you and whether they have your back. I would prefer to be judged by my performance as opposed to a skewed popularity contest. Individuals at the corporate office assume much and know very little about who is actually working, who is not being ethical, etc. There is no sense of unity or team work. In my case, certain individuals (unfortunately for me these individuals were highly ranked in the company) wanted to believe ill of me, so they did. Nothing I did or said made any difference. I left before things could escalate further, but as someone who worked extremely hard and took pride in what I did, the harassment and drama were not worth it. However, if the people above you go to bat for you and you can stay out of the line of fire, there is the chance to enjoy working for Petsense.

Pros

Fun environment. Vast opportunities to advance at store level and with new store setup projects. Other mentor roles available within each market. Comparable salary. Without issue, I was given time off when I encountered family emergencies or health issues. Pets, pets, pets! Opportunities to practice community outreach and fundraising for rescues and shelters. Corporate office encourages new ideas and suggestions. You get to learn a ton about pets and pet nutrition both at the yearly manager summit and during day to day operations.

Cons

Processes are still being refined and streamlined, so there are a lot of communication issues between stores and the corporate office. Retail will never be a static environment. However, I think there are too many promotions and changes happening simultaneously, leaving store managers' focus too thin. The culture has changed out of necessity as the company continues to grow. However, the general tone of upper management had somewhat devolved to condescension and negativity. My Personal belief is that if I feel respected and valued, I'll do a better job, be better with customers, and I'll be a better example/ leader for my team. That's not to say I didn't feel at all valued or respected, but my perception is that so much pressure was being put on upper management, they in turn changed their communication style toward us as managers and put pressure on us. And some pressure is necessary. But I think there's a better way to deliver it. Unless you want to be a DM, there is very little opportunity for advancement.
