Pros

Benefits, flexibility. Opportunity to learn across multiple media.

Cons

No advancement. There are no opportunities for growth unless someone leaves, retires or resigns. Pay is not commensurate with industry.

Pros

It's nice to have a steady, full time job. It is almost impossible to get fired from the county.

Cons

It is almost impossible to get a raise or promotion (the perception is that you have to wait for someone to die or retire) and unless you are being hired for one of the upper level classifications you have zero negotiating power for starting salary. It is almost impossible to get fired from the county, regardless of how incompetent you are. (The deadwood just gets shuffled to a position where they can't interfere with the actual work of the department.)

Pros

It is some form of employment

Cons

-More privatization is being done, so no job is secure -Starting pay is so-so at best; you'll probably do better or as well in private industry -No pay raise for 5 years, and when it's raised 1% on 7/1/13, employee's ASRS (pension) percentage increases too, so will be lucky to see half of the 1% raise -ASRS takes over 11% of gross paycheck, so you are paying heavily into the pension plan -Despite sending managers to management courses, which should have been done BEFORE they were promoted to those positions, bad habits die hard and managers are as poor as ever.
