Pros

If you have specific interests or skills, you can usually find a way to employ them. You can usually work pretty independently without micromanagement from immediate supervisors. Transfer opportunities are available.

Cons

Pay is a bit low. The annual review process is meaningless becasue there is no incentive for good performance, and no real penalty for poor performance. There is no merit pay. Promotion within the system provides very little benefit -- small increase in pay, but huge increase in stress. There is an emphasis on centralization, which undermines innovation on the department level and creates sort of a "cog in the machine" mentality.

Pros

Good experience in a municiple government. Plenty of opportunites to vary specialties between, wastewater, transportation, flood control and developmental services.

Cons

Poor pay. Vacation time could be better. The pay and the State requirement to have 8 years of experience before you can test for PE is a major draw back.
