Pros

Really, the only reason to work here is for the amount of paid time off you receive; you'll need it after dealing with management and the terrible students.

Cons

Let's see, the management is abusive and borderline racist towards their non-african american employees. Advancement opportunities go to managements friends and if you have issues with that they force you out. The union is a joke, you pay the dues every pay period and when you need them they do nothing for you and you can tell they are in lock step with the college's leadership. The students are awful and are allowed to treat staff however they want without repercusion, each office really needs a cop on duty due to the behavior of the students. I saw numerous fights as well as students throwing up gang signs. Every time I went to the washroom there were blunt packages and empty pot baggies laying around. The offices are also disgusting, the office I worked in had water leaking from the ceiling causing mold to form. It was also freezing in the winter and terribly hot in the summer and, despite repeated calls to maintenance, it was never rectified. Theres no professional development provided and no training whatsoever. The job I had I had never done prior to being employed at prairie state and my training consisted of shadowing a part time employee for one day and then going live the next day, ridiculous. The pay is well below the industry standard and the pay raises, negotiated by the fabulous union, are a joke. Stay as far away from this place unless you want to stall your career or potentially get involved in a gang war.

Pros

Good adjunct union, well organized and advocate for part-time benefits. Great President and Deans.

Cons

On occasion, the support staff (i.e. Admin Assistants) think they make all the rules. The hierarchy of supervision is blurred between department heads and the administrative assistants for the deans. If you are supposed to have things cleared through your chair, make that clear to the admin staff. Right now, they seem to make the calls rather than dept. chairs.
